What's in the box

Congrats on your new Moist Nugget
Just to be scientific about this preposition. Study the following photos to determine which tinpot dictator is the most festooned?

.
Is that Force? Geez, he looks like Percy Bardot. . . .

And I thought the box would be full of pasties…
Took it to the range. Sticky bolt… like slam it to open.I think the accuracy is good was shooting a 10 inch plate with iron sights at 240 yards. About one in 5 on target. I think the rifle is better than Iam. I did notice the barrel is a counterbored muzzle. Meaning the crown is about three inches inside the bore at the end. Seems odd that they would do this. The rifling is deep and sharp not worn a bit?? Werid?

I’m going to scrub the shit out of the chamber and polish it.(20 gauge wire brush and mothers polish w/ drill) I will also polish the firing pin/boltface as well.

I did polish the trigger today, big diffrence in the pull. much, much improved over the creaky, scrachy stock/issue trigger.

Iam really, really hoping it’s not a headspace issue. If it is I guess I’ll be learning about something new.
The back bore means the rifle was shot quite a bit. It was far cheaper counter bore worn or dammaged rifleing than rebarreling. They also chopped a few and made carbines.

When cleaning up these old weapons, scrubbing the chamber is imperative. Rimmed cartridges headspace on the flange. The 7.62x54 is semi-rimmed. Any oil or grease residue in the chamber or bolt face can cause the bolt to stick. Make sure the ammo is also free of any residue.

If it still sticks after a through cleaning, check for any stretch marks or splits on the casings. If so, have the headspace checked. If in tolerance, try a different batch of ammo. Also, this is an easy cartridge to reload with simple hand tools.

Crazy thing is the bore is very sharp? Rifleing is great.

Cleaned the crap out of it, polished the chamber, polished contact points on the bolt, polished the firing pin, cut one loop off the firing pin spring… it’s better only one stick in about 10 rounds. So more polishing is in order. polished the trigger up some more it’s getting really smooth. Checked all the spent ammo, no tears or streaches so I don’t think it’s the headspacing. I hit a coke can @ 100 yards. I’m using the 147 grain steelcore ammo.

Projects! but it’s fun to debug a rifle. I noticed today it’s getting alot easier to load the internal mag than the first time out. I found out today I can die the end to install an AK74 style brake.(15mmx1 RH) My friends an I enjoy shooting a gong @ 250 yards

I’m wondering if the heavier ammo would work better??? 182gn. (I saw a guy on you tube shoot 1000 yards using a mosin he was shooting 200 grain ammo.)

Headed out to the garage to spray it down with windex then, scrub and oil it up. In the AM I’ll polish it some more and see. I tend to go light on the polishing you can always sand a little more but you can’t put more metal back on!

The case capacity of the 7.62x54 is about the same as the 30 06. Many powders available. Bullet dia for the Russian mods are .311 to .312 which are the same for the 303 and various 7.65 mausers. Boxer primed cases are redily available. Neck sized cases can be reloaded many times fired from the same gun.

Be careful how much money you sink into an old rifle. It’s just like a boat…

Ahhh shit. Just finished cleaning it. Noticed a crack in the breach at about the 2 o clock position near the cutout… WTF… it’s on the thin part… NOW WHAT? Wallhanger?I just checked my paperwork and Fleet Farm has a NO RETURN policy on firearms.

Well these things are quite old and cheap for a reason… They have quite a few of them for about the same price down here as well. A buddy of mine just picked up one.

Well I called Fleet Farm. They said it’s up to the manager. They said to bring it in and have him look at it and he would decide if an excange could be made. Hopefully they will make this right. If not the next step is Century arms international. (the importer) I’m not holding my breath for that one.

Oh my goodness - I never had THAT relationship with my guns. Am I missing out?

i refer to them as my kids all named, sorry rebel its not a naval service pistol but a harpers ferry general issue! intresting side note this isthe weapon found on the seal of the army military police!

Well just finishing cleaning an tweaking my 2nd M91. I was able to return the 1942. Also got a $10 dollar rebate as they went on sale for $89.00 bucks today. I got a Tula 1938. This one must have a new trigger installed,no wear and no free play.(forward travel when cocked). Buffed the trigger contact surfaces with a scrub pad. Polished the firing pin and cut one loop off the pin spring.(may have to cut another it’s still damm tight.) Another counterbored one ;( there were a few non-counterbored ones but I did not like em’ for one reason or another. The bottom of the barrel under the stock looks like russian alphabet soup. The 38 seems to be difftent from the 42 I had apperars to be better made. The trigger guard has a finger indention at the rear of the guard - the 42 did not have this it was just round. Trigger is stronger than I like but is damm smooth.

I also checked the barrel, it’s almost ā€œfree floatedā€ only two spots that need some tweaking - later.

Off to the range tomm to see how it prints on paper. Going to start with a poster board and see just what it’s doing @ 100 meters.

WOW!

I’m impressed. Still needs some fine tuning (or I do?) Shot a target @ 100 meters, then shot a target @ 200 meters. (about 250yards) Iron sights.

200 meters Using 147 gn steel core surplus ammo ($85 for 440 rds)(rifle was sighted at the factory for 300 meters!!!)

The target is that square speck on the backstop/berm.

A view down the sights. That square speck on the berm is the target above. Not the target above the front sight the one BEHIND that one.

The M91 and my cousin’s tricked out .308 Savage. See your PFD really is useful for something!

60 rounds shot, at various targets, including a bird near the berm. My cousin was spotting, I missed by about 2 inches. Hey imagine trying to SEE a bird at that range!

One of the advantages of shooting a target at this range is anything shorter is childs play.(just have to rembember the bullet rises then drops)

I need to drift the front sight just a hair. I also need to float the barrel and do some more polishing on the bolt.

Had one sticky bolt incident, very carefully cleared the empty using the cleaning rod, dropped down the barrel to ā€œpingā€ the spent case, scrubbed the hell out of the chamber and no more trouble.

Now the question? Mod the rifle to accept my POSP rom scope($28) or get one of the repop M91 sniper scopes???($145)

Here’s a pix of an M91 with the POSP scope (same type as used on my PSL and Dragnov type rifles)

I plan to add rubberbutt pad, bent bolt,Poss an AK74 break to help tone it down a bit. and one of two scopes POSP or the ā€œorginalā€ sniper scope not sure yet.

FUN,FUN,FUN

Not bad for a 74 year old rifle that cost $89 bucks…of course Iam a good shot…

Here’s another cool one…

Drifted as in hammered the sight over.

100meters 3 shots from PFD bench.

3 shots prone @ 100 meters.

3 hits out of 6 at 200 meters on a paper plate with Iron sights.

Can’t wait to get a scope on it!

I lightened the trigger and ā€œfloatedā€ the barrel.

Best $89 bucks I ever spent.

Update -

Scoped and bi-pod. But I cant go shoot till the bent bolt gets in dammit!!

How did I miss this thread until now?

Below is the newest addition to my collection:

M1 - Carbine. 1.5" pattern at 50 metres, lightweight with little recoil. Great fun to shoot.

I also have a Bushmaster in .223 but to tell the truth, the 70 year old M1 is more fun to shoot. The Bushy looks badass and all but it only gives me 5" patterns at 100 metres.
