yes, they are morons BUT more importantly, They are TERRORISTS and CRIMINALS. they routinely violate violate international maritime laws on TV just for ratings! I cant wait for the day the Japaneese finally get sick of the games and sue Discovery Channel for financing a terrorist
I enjoyed the prop fowler tied to the FRB and about pulling them over, that was great TV!
You guys are just increasing their ratings by posting this stuff. I had no desire to watch before but now I do…
I don’t watch anymore so it’s a wash.
Stupidity it’s always entertaining!!!![]()
I liked how on the last episode they wanted to do something “stealth” so they said no radios but then made it out like they couldnt even take a radio on the RIB and use it if they had an emergency. Go Sea Shepherd!
Well I was on Hulu tonight looking for a documentary to watch and so I searched ‘boat captain’, this documentary came up!
As a disclaimer I am in no way shape or form even a deckhand on a commercial vessel just a wannabe that enjoys watching
the antics as seen on Animal Planet’s Whale Whores!
If you skip to about 13min or so, when they are doing an abandon ship drill on deck you will see the 2nd mate trying to put on
a survival suit. Not even having any training I think this is common sense, they have been a joke since before the show!!
Enjoy
This is before their inflatables had twin engines and those big fancy radars! And before those big, bright orange Mustang suits with matching helmets

If you had any training you would know just how ignorant your statements above and below really are.
Not even having any training I think this is common sense
Training is designed to prevent what you call “common sense” from killing you or someone else. I would love to see a video of you putting on a survival suit with nothing more to guide you than your “common sense.”
I believe that the people who have never worked on a boat who come here to trash the crew of the Whale Wars vessels usually make the WW gang look pretty good in comparison. Common sense should tell you that before criticizing mariners (even the most amateur ones) you should at least know as much as they do … especially if you choose to do it on a professional mariner’s website. You kind of rode your bicycle up to a biker bar and think you can gain favor by trashing scooter drivers …
I was be facetious in regards to the inflatables and I apologize that I offended your industry.
If you watched that segment, you would see that the crew is laughing along with the 2nd mate
during his putting the survival suit on during the drill. I would say (if I dare) this would not be customary
in other situations because of the serious nature of the drill.
Again I’m sorry if I stepped on any toes. Just saw that video and thought to pass it along.
I hope whoever reads this understands I did not intend to piss anyone off.

Laughing during a drill! At someone getting stuck in a Gumby suit! Oh My Gawd! Now that is going too far!
That puts an entirely different light on things and I am glad that someone pointed it out so that the IMO will be able to use that as a case study when they write the next pamphlet on how to create drill scenarios.

Again, sorry to step on toes!
Looking at my posts I do realize I come off as pretty ignorant which I am in this case.
Lesson learned for me here!

The largest benefit I have experienced from emergency drills, since I’ve never had the misfortune of having had an actual fire or abandon ship scenario, has been the identification of poor or faulty equipment.
While I believe a bit of humor has it’s place in any situation (just look at my signature) when it becomes an overriding factor, such as I believe was the case in the portion of the video I watched, it detracts from the seriousness of the training. As a Bosun I worked with said to the cattle at the abandon ship drill that were joking, laughing, and smoking, “If you don’t have the time for this training then get the hell off my deck and expect to die in an emergency because I won’t be coming to save you. Emergencies don’t occur at 1700 in calm seas like we have now, they occur at 0300 with whipping winds, driving rain, and 40 foot waves.”
I could understand one of their “crew” having difficulty putting on a survival suit. Did we not get to see the portion of the training where everyone else donned an immersion suit or was the 2nd Mate the only one to put it on? If not, what was the point of the training, to see the 2nd Mate make a mockery of an essential life preserving exercise?
While I understand your irritation with someone for expressing an opinion on something they know nothing about, to consider the Whale Whores mariners is just as insulting, if not more so.
Fortunately you did not have to discover that the largest benefit was not having to think about what to do or where to do it when something really happened.

That bosun should have had his ass kicked. Many passengers - and they are not cattle - may exhibit “inappropriate” behavior when they are nervous or frightened. If that bosun wasn’t trained to recognize and understand that and was allowed to threaten the people he was supposed to be training, he should never have been allowed to conduct a drill.

They are out there keeping the ship running in a remote area, they are as much mariners as any other crew. How well they look doing it compared to others might be debatable but they have probably killed fewer of their crewmates than the pros inland or in the Gulf working in better conditions.
Which was part of my point.

No passengers, but not mariner’s either. Their presence had to do with the purpose of the vessel. Pipe laying. So the cattle comment stands and as far as the Bosun is concerned, a kindler, gentler marine environment isn’t up to him and he wasn’t there to baby sit. As it was, for their safety, the mariner’s, such as myself, were required to step in and do their job on a number of occasions so they didn’t hurt themselves.

I don’t give a rat’s ass about how they look. I care about their professionalism, due to the extreme environment they are operating in and the fact that the majority of their crew are, in fact, not mariners, but volunteers for a cause, many of whom have absolutely no business being where they are. The virtue of their endeavor aside.
Bad training is worse than no training and while you may be correct, they have probably killed fewer of their crewmates (I’m not aware of any), the unusually high number of incidents and accidents they have had can largely be attributed to their own incompetence (we’ll call the Ady Gil incident a joint endeavor as New Zealand determined it to be). What’s going to happen when mother nature steps in, as she always does in our industry, and provides them an emergency not of their own creation? Let’s talk about how many of their own crewmates they’ve killed after that.
I recall from one of the first episodes the “Chief Engineer” was introduced and told the viewing audience that he didn’t even know how to change a tire.
But I digress. I did a little bit of looking about and what I’ve read leads me to believe that the vessel is registered as a private yacht and not used for commerce. Thus there are no manning or licensing requirements. Also I can find no validation to the idea that any on board are licensed in any way.
Paul Watson isn’t licensed & if you google it you would be amazed by the forums & the comments about him not being licensed.
I actually went back and have been watching it on Netflix. I’m not sure if that is more embarrassing than admitting I watch
Maury.
If you look up their boats they are all listed as MY not MV which goes along with the yacht registration. I’m pretty sure i read somewhere the 2nd Mate has a license but he is the only mate with one. The caption under the guy who can’t change a tire just said “engineer” and he said he “works in engineering”. A few more episodes in they introduce the Chief. They never say if he has a license but he obviously knows what he’s doing.
The smartest guy on that show is the Dutch comms guy in season 1. They are asking everyone who is making the next trip and when told Peter Brown is he said no.
After watching it again, Peter Brown is an even bigger moron than I remembered.
My wife and I are currently watching whale wars and are astonished that two middle aged men (Paul Brown and Paul Watson) not only have a boat and the money for maintenance but finding a crew and a whaler crew while having to fine eachothers single brain cell lost beween iceburgs in the middle of the antartic ocean. Not only do they have a useless talent for stating the obvious, but they unnecessarily put peoples lives at risk on a regular basis. These two Pauls are not only a disgrace to any Captain or 1st Mate, but to any deck hand and sailor to ever live. The Sea Shepard is completely unorganized on bridge and deck. I am actually astonished that Animal Planet would support this kind of idiocy!
Paul Brown cannot understand directions at the helm and hes been sailing for 30 years! This is not a documentary of saving whales, it is a comedic tragedy of 2 mens ego gone megalomaniac!!!
“I can’t turn to port, I’m already all the way to starboard!”
I’m pretty sure those words were uttered by Brown, and if so, nothing more needs to be said about his (in)competence as a mariner, does it?
