Covid-19 News/Updates

I’ve been seeing them on my twitter feed. Some have the source on the bottom right, I believe they are from the Financial Times.

Here’s a pretty impressive site:

We’re the top dog in confirmed cases, with a couple thousand over China.

During today’s White House press briefing the President explained the reason we have more confirmed cases of coronavirus than any other country is a ‘testament to the wonderful job we do testing.’ We do more testing so we have more cases.

He then asked ’Do you trust the numbers from China?’ They’re undercutting their numbers.

" President Trump announced Thursday that the USNS Comfort, a Navy hospital ship, will leave for New York on Saturday — at least three weeks ahead of schedule — and he will see it off.

Trump had previously said the ship would take longer to arrive in New York City because it was undergoing maintenance, but at a White House news briefing, Trump touted the ingenuity of the Navy for finishing their repairs early and said he will bid it bon voyage in Virginia. There will be 1,200 medical personnel and critical supplies onboard the vessel.

“I think I’m going to go out and I’ll kiss it goodbye,” he said, adding about the ship: “There’s something very beautiful about it.“”

Finished early or pencil-whipped?

Any tug escort for the voyage?? (JIC)

That’s a level of detail that will probably not appear in WaPo.

Finished? No. I was there today. She’ll get to New York. At least the flooding has improved…

Someone swam underneath with a can of sawdust, to cut it to a dull roar until she takes up?

ETA: She’s a steel ship, you say? Ah well.

Side note – my first wife served briefly on Sanctuary when she was in JAX. She wasn’t my wife yet, and the command sent her away because the CO didn’t like us living together.**

**He lived across the road from my parents – dunno whether that influenced anything.

So they just cleared up all those 835’s like magic eh? Very interesting.

In fairness, if they can get her to NYC anywhichway she’ll be a lot more use than sitting in a shipyard.

True. Depending on what’s left outstanding, she could probably be useful even if she had to be towed. I know some of the outstanding items involved the fire protection system, but I’m sure that’s been resolved. I hope. I don’t have a contact there anymore.

<hollow laughter> @DeckApe may know.

But unlike those industries, major cruise operators don’t locate their headquarters in the United States, so they will not have access to $500 billion in aid for large employers in the massive stimulus bill, the industry’s trade group said Thursday.

Language in the 883-page bill passed by the Senate says that to be eligible for aid from the $500 billion fund, companies must be certified as “created or organized in the United States or under the laws of the United States” as well as having “significant operations in” and a majority of employees based in the United States.

Major cruise companies have located their primary headquarters overseas, which for years has allowed them to pay almost no federal taxes and avoid some U.S. regulations. To staff their ships, the companies rely heavily on foreign workers from the Philippines, Indonesia and India.
