I’m trying to decide if I want to take a 5 day course at SUNY. I’m concerned about high hidden costs for meals and lodging. Has anyone taken continuing ed courses there? What are the best options?
I have used priceline and Hotwire and ended up staying nearby in Stamford, CT. Just don’t get caught in the morning traffic.
Yea I’d suggest staying in some nearby motel. Anywhere in that part of the Bronx you can probably find some cheap place. New Rochelle is nice and probably closer than Stamford.
You can also try the Sailors’ Club in midtown, they are usually booked months in advance but at $75 a night it’s as cheap as it gets in NYC. Also the Pod hotel and Yotel are affordable options in the city.
Call the person selling the course to you and ask him/her if they can help set you up on campus. And if not, where?
The area around Schuyler sucks for hotels. We had our reunion there recently and the alumni association choose a hotel in Yonkers as the best option.
Two cheap options in Manhattan are the Seaman and International House at 123 E. 15th Street. Private room with a shared bath. Never had anyone knock on the door while I was contemplating my navel. Another option is the Soldier’s, Sailor’s and Airmans Club on Lexington Ave about 37th St. They have very cheap barracks style accomodations. They have two man rooms that cost about $75 or so. Then they have the General’s room which is the only double bed in the place. No matter which room you’re in, all heads and showers are public. Merchant Mariners must have their MMC to show the desk. Both places have websites. I’ve stayed in both. For NYC, its probably your cheapest option. Not to mention that the places are run by charities that help sailors.

The SUNY staff was no help at all as far as housing goes. They claim they have not offered any on campus housing for several years. Comparatively, Maine Maritime has pretty good on campus rooms for $65.
The closest motel is the Capri Whitestone Motel for $100. One of the Tripadvisor reviews claims they had bed bugs. There were several places on Air BnB that sounded ok at $50 to $150 but the hosts never got back to me. The best deal appears to be the Opera House Hotel on E. 149th St in the Bronx (8 miles away) for $103. It was very favorably reviewed on Tripadvisor. $103 seems pretty reasonable for NYC. About the same as most places down in the Bayou
