Does anyone know if there are any summer jobs available for cadets? I am curious about the possibility to get a job in the Industry after I get back from my summer training cruise this summer.
It may help to know where you are at. Unless you are willing to travel the country for a job. I know in the Bay Area a lot of the tug companies and bay cruise companies hired cadets. What major? As an engineer when I was in school I had a job overhauling ship engines. Pay was good, but the experience was better.
I am currently at SUNY Maritime and I am a Marine Transportation major perusing a deck license.
You need to check your MMC. If it says it is rated as ‘cadet’ then you can’t use it to ship on.
But if it is O.S. or A.B. you can.
Most companies won’t hire you on a temporary basis, since they have to put out money to hire you. Drug test, background check, credit check, physical, all costs money.
You could try some of the fast ferrys that run around the harbor. Have you heard about the little lube oil tankers that run out of Elizabethport? I know that several dozen past students have worked there too. But it is not full time, but more like a pick up job, as they need you.
If you have your AB or OS, and you want a “fun” summer job you could look into Blunt Small Ship Adventuresor American Cruise Line. They both operate subchapter T K cruise vessels on the eastern seaboard, and if you get on with the right crew its not a bad place to learn some seamanship and small boat handling.
Call McAllister NY. They love Suny kids
I am looking for summer employment after my training cruise, I am currently enrolled at Maine Maritime in the Marine Engineering Ops program. I am applying for deck hand jobs and seem to be having a hard time definitely willing to travel. - Justus Doane
If you are in the Engineering program, why are you applying for a deckhand job? If it’s anything like Mass Maritime you have to do a sea project which is based on your major. Without that you will not get the credits for the ship out.
Fly down, get a hotel and a rental and go to all the companies you can. Give yourself a solid week to go to each one. If they offer you a job I’m your first day down, take it!!! They will not hold a job for you so you can check out the other companies
Good luck!

As you know, its mostly about being in the right place at the right time.
Also, I’m not in the Gulf. I’m at a well managed small company that actually reads resumes, knows how to hire effectively over the phone, and is always planning ahead for anticipated future needs. They are smart enough to value the opinion of their captains.

You could have just said that and no one would have mistaken you for being in the Gulf.
I like unicorns.
