RIP LT Carter

Former President Jimmy Carter died today at 100 years old.

For those who don’t know Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946, 59th out of a class of 850.

Carter served on Submarines.

He is only one of six U.S. presidents to have served in the U.S. Navy

He was also the 1st POTUS to be born in a hospital, lived in the same small house for 60 yrs & was one of the first group of officers to start the US Navy nuclear submarine program. A great man who lived a spectacular life.

Not a great President, but a truly great human being.

I put the ensign at half-staff as soon as I heard of his passing.

RIP, sir. We have the watch. From a 28-yr USN Mustang.

Wasn’t President Gerald Ford a lieutenant on a carrier during WWII? I think he was almost lost overboard in a storm.
I always thought President Carter had been dealt a poor hand by events and his faith and empathy were to be admired.

I particularly liked Jimmy Carter for his contribution to the report with former Secretary of State James Baker that stated, “Absentee ballots remain the largest source of potential voter fraud.”

That was among its 87 recommendations which still hold true today despite being evaded by many of those in power.

Perhaps, (I have high hopes) a new administration will do something about the third world electoral systems plaguing US politics and spread that influence to the states.

Jimmy Carter’s otherwise poor presidential legacy may yet be resurrected.

U.S. elections a big concern down under?

Yes. They effect the entire world … or didn’t you know?

Carter was a weak and horrible President.

I remember the 21% interest rates (admittedly that was mostly Paul Volker’s shock therapy). I remember the gas lines at double the normal price. I remember the profligate spending and high inflation.

I remember the Iranian hostage crisis that Carter bungled. That’s what got Reagan elected.

Painful times when “peanuts” was President.

The damn fool gave away our Panama Canal. He can never be forgiven for that.

Carter was the worst President since Herbert Hoover.

It’s ok, I understand we’re gonna get it back soon.

Well, that’s true. The good news is that most of you old codgers won’t have to see the fallout from this disaster of a Trump administration in the next 30 years. Carry on old chap! Cheerio!

Have you never watched Sky News? They love American politics.

Our newspapers have at least 3 pages of international news, much of it concerning American politics, not counting the coverage of financial news in our business section of the paper. New Zealand farmers and vineyard owners have a vested interest in what is happening in the US.
We have over the years had some interests in the USA , including a past CEO of General Electric and present CEO of Rocket Lab.

The ‘fallout’ is happening now. We are heartened by it.

Lefty’s heads are exploding, some are fleeing overseas, Mexico stopped assisting the invasion from the south, CNN reporters crawl on their knees to Mar a Lago, special prosecutor considers his future sweeping streets somewhere, coal, oil and gas producers have got the order to ‘Drill, baby, drill’, Fani Willis sacked from Trump case, other lawfare judges trying to escape their perfidy, a gazillion Lefty-triggering executive orders drafted for day one, even Australia’s ambassador to Washington wipes his posts of all his Trump hatred and pulls his head in for once. Much, much more as well.

All this is good and worthy and I heartily endorse it all … as, I see my fellow Forum members do too!

And he’s not even sworn in yet. I don’t have enough popcorn.

First I would like to say the far right against the far left on this thread, as on almost all other threads, is disheartening. President Carter was 100 years old. I don’t think I ever meet anyone over 80, 85 years old who were assholes. Either assholes don’t make it that long or older age causes people to become more humble & mellow out? But Carter seemed like a good man from the get go. Sure, bad President but a decent person. Him being a decent person was probably the reason he was a bad President, can’t hold that against him after all these years. All that being said, Jan 9th 2025 is now a 1 day federal holiday in memory of Carter. Hopefully that means mariners working federal contracts get paid holiday/OT pay on that day?

I don’t know if there are any records for IQ of US Presidents, but I think Jimmy Carter (RIP) would rank in the top part of the list. Probably THE top among those of the last 75 years.

I don’t know if he can be blamed for high inflation, or high oil prices caused by external things that no President (or any other single person) controlled.

The same goes for the Iran hostage crisis, and the botghed rescue attempt.
Yes it “happened on his watch”, but there is a limit to what even a US President can be blamed for.

I do not understand, if Trump didn’t “destroy” the US the first time, why do people think he will “destroy the US” now? And too bad a thread about a good man gets turned into a political diatribe.

I’m of the opinion that Lt. Carter became president at a time than anyone who became president would have “suffered” the consequences of the time.

I believe he meant well. Perhaps he was too nice a guy for the machine he found himself in.

I respect that he went from President to truly “former President,” unlike those who still deliver speeches (for $500,000 a pop) and parade themselves around front and center like anyone should give a damn. Jimmy Carter didn’t sit around his Martha’s Vineyard mansion sipping lemonade and dipping his finger in current affairs, he put himself out there helping ordinary people at ground level, eye to eye with them and with humble determination.
