I obtained my 500/1600 master in 1995 went to war on USS America, retired from navy, worked at USMMA for a year then stupidly went to law school and did that. I’m recovering from that missive. Anyway, I’d like to get my master renewed or reissued or whatever. I had the 2nd Mate AGT too, but I don’t care about that. What do I need to do? I’ve sailed on private boats and yachts since then. My goal is moving yachts around the world for their owners when I’m not on my sail boat.
See 46 CFR 10.227 subparagraph (i).
Are you the Brian Gay who ran a push boat moving dredged material in San Francisco Bay in the mid nineties?

Did you let the license expire? If so, you will need to re-take the entire exam. I suspect that is the case, as if you had kept it up to date you would know what’s needed and wouldn’t be asking.
I would apply NOW. STCW95 came around after you got that license, you will need this to work outside the boundary line. You can still get the STCW endorsement under grandfathering, but only until January 1, 2017. After that, it will be a lot harder to get that endorsement.
For STCW, you will need at a minimum the following courses under grandfathering (before January 1, 2017) to get the STCW endorsement for Master:
STCW Basic Safety Training (5 days)
Bridge Resource Management (3 to 5 days)
This would be the minimum to get the endorsement before January 1, 2017, but the endorsement will only be valid until January 1, 2017. For the endorsement to be valid after that date, you will need a course for Leadership and Managerial Skills (you can take this one additional course after January 1, 2017).
If you can’t get these courses before 1/1/2017 and apply before that date, you will need additional courses for Master, and also need to take courses for “Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch” (corresponds to Mate). You will also need to sign off a large number of practical demonstrations. It will be something like 10+ courses, and close to two hundred practical demonstrations, so I would do whatever you can to get those two courses (BST and BRM) in the next month.
