More trouble for Carnival

Just heard a Pan Pan from Coast Guard Mobile - Carnival Triumph has broken free of the BAE docks!

Mariners are requested to keep a sharp lookout, assist if possible, and report all sightings to the Coast Guard haha.

That’s gonna be expensive.

No fucking way.

It’s true, gCaptain is ahead of the game again. We had gusts of 70 downtown. The local news is just now catching on to it. They are saying possibly one body in the water.

Yup. Sounds like they have it corralled somehow, but they have somebody in the water now. Don’t worry he’s got his hard hat on!

This is how she was tied up the other day. She was facing about due west. The wind was coming from the SSE just about hitting her broadside.

Sure enough

Couple days late for April Foolz…innit?

Oops…I’m the April Fool…just saw Mikey’s post.

Moe, Larry and Curley could run that outfit better.

The shipyard may have taken custody of the ship while work was being done, in which case we should be laughing at BAE. They would be the responsible party for keeping the ship to the pier.

And if Alabama yards are the same as many other American yards the lines holding her fast were rotten, chaffed and had eyes tied with granny knots.

Sounds like that derecho that blew through here last year. I was working a box boat and they pulled the gangway up and blew down the ME “just in case.”

I was in Bergen with a Costa ship and we had 50mph winds blowing down the waterfront all day, almost broadside, pushing us against the pier and pushing them away from it. The Costa ship had a big tug pushing it against the pier all day long, after they broke a couple mooring lines in the morning. They left first and then the tug came to pull us off as we couldn’t push off ourselves with our single bow thruster. I would have thought they might have had a tug alongside the Triumph if they knew the storm was coming. Not really anything to blame on Carnival in my opinion.

Nobody here is in Mobile? email us some pics tips@gcaptain.com

Update: Carnival Cruise Lines has confirmed to gCaptain:

Due to strong winds in Mobile, Ala., Carnival Triumph, which was docked at a Mobile shipyard, broke away from its moorings. The ship drifted and is currently resting against a cargo vessel. Tug boats and the U.S.Coast Guard are on site.

Mobile Fire-Rescue Dept. has confirmed that USAR search dogs have been brought in to assist with search of missing BAE employee. The employee was believed to be in a nearby guard shack that was blown over in the storm.

MFRD added it has now turned over the recovery operation to the Mobile Police Dept., USCG and Mobile Co Sheriffs Flotilla.

The Carnival Triumph is resting against a cargo vessel at Signal International’s shipyard, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Carnival Cruise Lines, “The Fun Ships!”

Just walked in the door and watched the local news. They’re still looking for the missing person. CG has shut the ship channel down while the search is ongoing. They also stated the ship was being towed down the river. It may be temporarily tied up at the old navy home port at Hollingers Island which is owned by the State Docks until the search is concluded. Someone just pointed out to me that the vessel pinned is the dredger Wheeler, which is operated by USACE.

The ship hint the dry dock that my ship is in and put a big hole in it. I have video of the whole thing but it is to big to post with my phone. The whole dry dock was rolling from the wind with my ship on the blocks.

Carnival statement… nothing new… except there were 800 people on the thing. Could that be correct?

Update on Carnival Triumph in Mobile, AL

April 3, 2013, 7PM ET

Earlier this afternoon, due to strong winds that reached speeds exceeding 70 miles per hour during a severe storm in Mobile, Ala., Carnival Triumph, which was in wet dock at a Mobile shipyard, broke away from its moorings. The ship drifted, and was secured.

With the assistance of tugboats on site, the ship has been moved to the Mobile Cruise Terminal. Lines have moored the ship, and, as a precaution, tugboats will remain alongside the vessel as well.

All of the approximately 600 crew and 200 contractors who were onboard the vessel are safe and have been accounted for through a roll call. There are no reports of injuries. While assessment of damage to the ship is ongoing, initial indications suggest the damage is limited.

According to reports, two shipyard employees on an adjacent pier fell into the water. One has reportedly been rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard and the search continues for the second. Our thoughts and prayers are with the missing shipyard employee and the family.

I think the Coast Guard just suspended the pan pan for the missing guy from the security shack. Not sure if they found him or not.

Doesn’t look like it. A few ships are still doing “limited” searching at night.
