Military Sealift Command

Hi Everyone,

When MSC offers you employment, (I am assuming they send you a contract of sorts, an offer of employment) how long do you have to either accept or decline that offer of employment.

For example, they send an offer of employment after the interview and everything, on the first of the month. How long does one have to either accept that offer of employment or decline that offer of employment?

Thanks. I hope that question makes sense.

Just take the offer. You can always change your mind during the process. Even during the first day of NEO, or any time after. I believe they mention that in the FAQs on their website.

Yeah I hear you there. I definitely understand that. My question was more aimed at if someone is working on a hitch with their current company and will not be available right when they get the offer of employment. How long does the applicant have to sit on that offer before they need to accept? Will they be able to accommodate someone who will not be available for a bit or does that applicant just lose out on that offer of employment?

Yes…they will work with you on a start date. There are a few people here (not necessarily this thread) who have mention that they negotiated / asked for a later NEO start date. Most people require a 2-3 week notice for their employer. And MSC does tell you at the offer “If you are working now, don’t quit your job”

You still have ways to go after the tentative offer. A start date isn’t offered until all your ducks are accounted for. That could take weeks / months.

Just realized how confusing my response was.

  1. You get a tentative offer pending Background, physical, drug testing, etc…
  2. Later (weeks to months later) you get an NEO start date. At which point one can negotiate a different start date to allow notification to a current employer.

You can change your mind at any point.

Any updates anyone? Looks like MCS is still filling classes.

No update here. Status is still “under review”

I have a upcoming Drug screen and medical so hopefully I will pass those .,I did apply for a any entry level position and was offered the su position and toked it. They require steal toe boots, do you guys have a favorite brand I have wore keens for most of my jobs ?

Don’t believe in the hype. You will be sitting in the pool forever

Hey Wes, can you shed some light about the pool. From what I know, it’s where you go and wait for an available ship to get on. You’re still getting paid, but only your base pay. What do you do in the pool while you wait? I’ve heard they conduct training. Is there training for months & months while you wait?

They do offer training at the pool but you will already have everything they offer from training in jersey. It’s boring no wifi or phone signal. Most people play cards. It’s very frustrating for us SU cause the base pay is garbage & I’m local so I’m not getting any s&q on top of that. Theirs like 35 SUs here & they are not moving fast. They feed yo BS that you going to be shipping out after training but that’s not true at all. License position seems to move fast but they have a lot of additional training after Jersey

Hey,
yeah i just filled out the rest of my MSC stuff, but after reading this thread it makes me feel very doubtful about even a positive call back. I also spent the day sending my resume and doc’s to headhunters or staffing places…and i’m not even sure how to get into a union, they all seem like secret societies. The SIU insists you go through the UA program, but i didn’t get chosen for that, so kind of screwed.
I guess just keep trying.

I got turned down from the school too as well as every major company in the Gulf of Mexico & MSC denied me the first 2 times. Feb 23rd was my first day of employment with MSC so keep trying.

Just an update. Been almost 3 months and my app is still only “forwarded” … Entry level.

I am going to apply soon as a AB/limited Questions

  1. will it take 3 months for reviews like your self?

  2. About how long do AB sit before they are sent out? 4 weeks 5 weeks?

How long do Ab’s sit in the pool?

Deck department is going fast. SUs usually go fast too but they over hired them but they are moving out now.

An SU picked up a ship fist day of his second week of training. New hire to a gig in 14 days. Wow!

How do I check my application status? I’m guessing they aren’t takin any entry level apps right now… How much seatime is needed to get my qmed or ab?

Has of June are there any updates for when the entry level will be back open so I can apply.
