This is my first oil field downturn. I’ve been told by the office that " they are looking for a spot for me and they’ll call".
I have been looking for work, knocking on doors, making call, etc. I wonder how many people in the Gulf are in this
situation. I haven’t been laid off yet but it seems like they want me to quit. Mr Murphy keeps telling me that the week after I go to work somewhere else will be when something opens up at my old job. My savings account will soon demand I take a job elsewhere.
damned how I want to respond here but I am going to forbear the desire to let fly…
not commenting about Joe Boss is not going to be as easy as I had hoped
must bite tongue HARD!

If they are not calling & you find another job, I would take take the job. Thats what I would do.
Why deplete your saving waiting for someone to call?
I’d be milking it to unemployment in the meantime.
I am fortunate enough to still be working, but I know a few good, hardworking engineers at my company who have been fired over nothing or sent home with a “we’ll call you when we need you”.
From my perspective, things are pretty ugly down here right now. I really wouldn’t waste any time waiting for the phone to ring if I was in your position. Even if your company really wants you back there’s no telling if they will have any work for you or not.
I’d strongly advise you to be proactive.
Good luck, Buddy.

Did “joe boss” let them fly to work only to give them thier pink slip after they got there? Like the last time the GOM slowed down. Did the “joe boss” laugh at them too as he handed them thier pink slip ? That is work in the GOM, welcome. How ya like the GOM now?

No shit, but you had to continue to add rhetorical questions about the same shit you’ve beat on over and over.
You’re just looking for attention, scooter.

not saying nothing other than this…
Im going to go out in a limb here but I think I speak for the thousands of people that are on G-Capt that have never posted anything-when this site was started it was a very helpful tool for any information if you were involved in the maritime industry. Somehow it’s turned into romper room and ‘Professional Mariner Forum’ is anything but. The constant barrage of childish rhetoric and chest thumping represents the joy people take in anonymity hiding behind some creative handle.
I may be completely off but I don’t think I am. I know G Captain won’t miss me but I certainly will not miss it either …at least it’s current state.

so what’s yer pernt?
I’m still working, along with everyone else at the big bad company that everyone loves to hate. Hell, I am still on my 28/14 schedule and have not had a pay cut yet! Can’t say that about the other big players out here. A lot of people can crap about ECO, but they have not done me wrong yet. I am not saying we will not get a pay cut before this is over, but I can say we will be the last ones to get them!
Same here. Still 28/14 and no pay cut in day rate.
Congrats on living 2/3 of your life on a boat?? That’s not something to brag about
Congrats on living 2/3 of your life on a boat?? That’s not something to brag about
Oh I am not a fan of the 2/1 schedule! I requested 28/14 after being on even-time bc of some things I want to get paid off before I started building my new house. I do not think anyone would want to brag about being on 28/14, I am only on it bc I do not want to end up like so many who get the golden handcuffs and wind up financed to death bc they cannot retire. I was only talking about ECO not forcing everyone even-time. This ole boy is going back even-time soon!!!
GCaptain has so much potential. In an industry that by its very nature is highly fragmented, where most of us will never meet each other, here is a tool where we can all get together, share our experiences, let each other know about all the good and the bad out there. We live in the information age, and that’s what this forum should be about, the sharing of information.
I know in AMO–yeah, yeah, dirty union, I sold myself down the river years ago–they always operated best when the membership was kept in the dark. Like it or not, a lot of the membership thought they were doing just great and better not upset that apple cart–particularly when that was the message being sent down from union HQ. Too many people made choices based on option A, which is work for a little something, or option B, which is not work at all–without ever realizing there was a perfectly viable option C, which is go work somewhere else entirely for more. I’ve run into a few guys over the years that had absolutely no idea there was ever anything else out there, thought the McCay/Bethel cabal was completely on their side, that once I (and others) explained exactly how they really operated, it was almost cartoonish seeing that realization dawn on their faces.
And that’s what this forum, and indeed gCaptain overall, ought to be about, letting mariners know about those options C, D, E, and F. The mariner realizing that, while he may be doing okay where he is, maybe he could be doing better. The mariner going into contract negotiations armed with all the info he/she can get–“Hey bossman, Company G over there is paying $600 a day plus full benefits for roughly the same job you’re asking me to do. There some reason you only want to pay $450 per day and I have to pay my own travel?”
Instead too many threads around here get the pointy stick treatment all too quickly. I’m not saying there are never times that the stick would be warranted–I’ve poked a couple people myself–just that maybe it shouldn’t be the default reaction, or indeed even the opening move. Too many threads follow the progression “some information --> pointy sticks and pitchforks --> more pointy sticks --> knee-jerk defending of our respective little fiefdoms”.

There was a recent thread on “Alarms” which was one of the best thread on gCaptain in a long time. All posts were informational about a problem we all deal with. No ranting, no name calling, just an exchange of information in a very professional manner. My thanks and thanks to those who posted on that thread.
It has become very easy to become very selective as to which threads to open, and which threads not to open.
