Harvey Gulf, any info helpful, Chief eng. jobs

Hello, I’m new to this forum and I am looking for a new job with higher wages and good benefits. I have heard good thing about Harvey
Gulf Marine and would like any feedback. I have a Third asst. eng. lic. and Chief limited any hp. Oceans, with 24 years experience on ocean going tugs and 2 years working in the fishing industry in Alaskan waters. I currently have what would be considered a good paying job in this area I work, but would like to make much more while I’m gone for home. My coworkers will think I’m “nuts” for leaving this current job…I don’t care. Also curious if a guy like me could get a job on a drill ship or platform, I’ve heard the money is better and a lot less likely to take a beating from bad weather…we have our share of bad weather out here on the West coast…Summer and Winter. I also would add I am a HAWSPIPER and not scared of hard work…Thank you Left Coast

Harvey is growing fast through acquisitions and new builds. Often this leads to some growing pains as the company adapts but I’m not sure if that is the case at Harvey right now.

Rumor is the pay is a little on the low side right now.

Any particular interest in Harvey or just looking to move into OSV’s in general?

Lot of other companies that pay the same or better down here. All have their good points along with bad.

Whats considered good pay for what you do in your part of the industry?

If you’re nuts for wanting to make $700 to north of $900 a day then we all need to be thrown in the loony bin.

Things are slow right now, but come spring it will get going again as that’s when several companies will be launching new builds. If I where you I would plan on buying a plane ticket around March or April and take a trip to the buoy for a week if I was you and plan on talking to everyone I could to get the best deal for myself.

Thank you for responding, I have no strong interest in any one company, what I am going for is the best money and benefits…crew comfort/HVAC control in your own quarters, WIFI internet, Satellite television…might as well dream big. I understand the bigger money is in deep water and ultra deep water OSVs/PSVs, also those vessels tend to remain busier. I may be completely wrong about what vessels stay busy? I am more familiar with line haul ocean going tugs…west coat, west coast to Hawaiian Islands, in the petroleum and general cargo trade. I have some experience with Crowley 550 class ATBs…150k bbl barges moving jet fuel, diesel fuel and all grades of gasoline. I am not stuck on OSVs/PSVs, Would possibly work on rig moving tugs, AHTs, Drill ships and maybe platforms? Its about a change of scenery and better wages for my experience as a successful chief engineer.

To answer your second question…$500 to $550 a day equal time off, union and nonunion, with most companies paying airfare. Equal time aka day for day over here is the norm. Most companies require a chief engineer to have at minimum a DDE 4000 to be chief even though the USCG does not require it. I work for a company that requires at least a chief limited (1600) any HP., I have the previous and a 3rd assistant unlimited-(HAWSPIPE). I will have a union pension (maybe) if they don’t steal it. We have full medical also…but is wanting in some areas. It may be very tough to work 240 days a year…BUT if the money is right…I may shoot for equal time realizing that I will probably work 195 to 200 plus days a year anyway.

Any advice/help is much appreciated, once again thank you for responding Left Coast
