Trump has mentioned the “Monroe Doctrine” (aka the "Donroe Doctrine) recently, which say that the US must control the Western Hemisphere to feel safe.

Greenland is in the Western Hemisphere, so there is all the “justification” required to take over Greenland, either by purchase, voluntary submission, or by military force.

PS: He just have to complete the takeover of Venezuela first.

Should Norway offer to take back Greenland?:
With much that has come to light recently, I understand that Greenland wants to break free from Denmark. From a Norwegian perspective, I have thought that Greenland should become Norwegian again, but now I wonder if we should offer it to them as an alternative?

If Greenland wants to become Norwegian, they must decide for themselves, before anyone offers it to them. They have been under Denmark for so long, that Norway should not “drool” over Greenland!
But whether they will be able to become economically, completely independent, I don’t know. Countries should not speculate on takeovers, without a genuine desire for something else.

Greenland must be the FIRST to come up with the proposal.
If they want this, I think Denmark and Greenland will probably agree on a solution.
Remember that Greenland is an autonomous country, where to a certain extent, they decide their own future.
If they choose to leave Denmark, they should be given even more autonomy than they have today.

Perhaps Nordic cooperation could be developed so that Greenland is financially supported by all 5 Nordic countries? Then they can “buy”/“rent”/“borrow” services such as foreign affairs and defense from the Nordic countries.
The Nordic cooperation is built as a parliamentary system, as if it were a support union. So why not?
But the Greenlanders must enter into discussions with the Nordic Council and the Council of Ministers, if they want that solution.
But first they have to decide whether they want to secede or not. Then they have to talk to Denmark.

This probably won’t happen in our lifetime. Just look at Scotland…

Goes against Trump: – Not a completely accurate picture

Denmark’s Foreign Minister believes Donald Trump “has an ambition” to control Greenland.
On Tuesday evening, the Foreign Affairs Committee in Denmark held a crisis meeting . Only one item was on the agenda: “the kingdom’s relations with the United States.”
This comes after Donald Trump reiterated his desire for the United States to control Greenland - which is subject to Denmark.

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen met with the press after the crisis meeting.
– We feel great support for the Kingdom of Denmark, says the Foreign Minister.
Trump has said that they need the island for security reasons and claimed that there are Russian and Chinese ships around Greenland.
– It is not a completely correct picture, to put it very diplomatically. That is why we think it makes sense to try to get a meeting with our American colleagues, says Rasmussen.

He also agrees with Trump that the Arctic must be better protected.
– We are also making a contribution to that, and it is also something we would like to cooperate with the Americans on.

– Have an ambition

Rasmussen is asked how they will handle it if the US intervenes militarily in Greenland.
– Now the question is whether we are in a foreign policy crisis. You could easily create that for yourself if you start fantasizing about all possible hypothetical situations, about annexations and other things. That is not our assessment, says the Foreign Minister.
– It is our assessment that the American president has an ambition, I think that is quite clear. If you look at American society, it is also quite clear that it is not an ambition that is widely shared, he says.

The head of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Christian Friis Bach says that the meeting is intended for the Danish government to brief the Folketing.
– I have made sure that Greenlandic members of parliament also receive a briefing from their government at the same time. It is important that we have a good common basis, he tells DR.
Greenland’s Foreign Minister says that Greenland and Denmark have requested an immediate meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
– The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the United States’ strong statements about Greenland, she writes on her Facebook page.

Rasmussen, together with his Greenlandic Foreign Minister colleague, has requested a meeting with the United States.

While many European leaders’ reactions to the Venezuela raid were muted, there have been forceful rebukes about the Trump administration’s greediness on Greenland.

Trump, posting on Truth Social on Wednesday, seemed to bristle at suggestions that he was endangering NATO, boasting that he had pressured allies to raise spending. “Everyone said that couldn’t be done, but it could, because, beyond all else, they are all my friends,” Trump wrote.
“RUSSIA AND CHINA HAVE ZERO FEAR OF NATO WITHOUT THE UNITED STATES, AND I DOUBT NATO WOULD BE THERE FOR US IF WE REALLY NEEDED THEM,” Trump said. “EVERYONE IS LUCKY THAT I REBUILT OUR MILITARY IN MY FIRST TERM, AND CONTINUE TO DO SO. We will always be there for NATO, even if they won’t be there for us.”

NATO, in fact, sprung to America’s aid after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, invoking its collective defense mechanism within 24 hours, for the first and only time in its history. NATO nations also deployed tens of thousands of troops to Afghanistan to support Washington’s war, and the alliance has generally regarded the U.S. as its leader.

Europe had been riding out Trump’s shocks, betting there would be limits. To many, those bets now look much riskier.

NATO has survived clashing allies before. Greece and Turkey, notably, have been in a standoff since Turkish forces occupied northern Cyprus in 1974. But, as Rahman noted, the U.S., NATO’s wealthiest and most powerful member, was instrumental in mediating that rift.
“Now it is causing it,” he said. “NATO can’t survive a forceful annexation. The alliance would be meaningless even if it continues to exist on paper.”

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said Monday that the “formal position” of the United States is that Greenland should be American, for national security reasons, and, that essentially, it was Trump’s for the taking. “Nobody’s going to fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland,” Miller said.
Miller’s wife posted an image of the American flag superimposed on a map of Greenland with the caption “SOON.”

“It’s clear that some people in and adjacent to the administration felt empowered by the success of the operation,” said Heather Hurlburt, an associate fellow in the Americas Program at Chatham House, the London-based think tank.
Hurlburt cited a retired U.S. general who viewed the White House move in Venezuela and its fixation on Greenland as reminiscent of teenagers playing the geostrategic board game Risk.
“Once you start down the road of the Monroe Doctrine or the ‘Donroe’ doctrine, or whatever we’re saying now, you look at a map of the Western Hemisphere, and there is Greenland,” she said.

Whether it’s gaming or grasping, European leaders face unpalatable choices. One is to stick with the unified hard line that emerged in recent days, making clear that any move on Greenland could trigger a response by European allies — not against Russia or China but, unthinkably, against the United States.
Invoking the NATO treaty’s collective defense clause, known as Article 5, under which an attack on one member is regarded as an attack on all, requires the unanimity of all 32 allies. The United States, of course, would reject any plea for help by Denmark — effectively neutering the treaty.

Politically, there is deep public resistance in both countries to any transfer of sovereignty. A YouGov poll for the Guardian last year found that 78 percent of Danes oppose selling the island to the U.S., while 85 percent of Greenland residents said in a separate survey that they do not want to be part of the U.S. The office of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declined to comment.

European militaries largely agree with Trump that the icy northern reaches of the Atlantic are going to be a strategic hot spot in coming decades, an obvious pathway for Chinese missiles and Russian submarines. Many say there would be little resistance to any U.S. plans to beef up its presence around the territory, which is already covered by NATO and numerous bilateral agreements between Washington and Denmark, and where the U.S. already has a military base.
Their fear, which has spiked since the White House delivered its object lesson in Venezuela, is that the old protocols really may be out the window. And their bigger fear may simply be: what comes next?
