Danish king to visit Greenland in show of unity amid Trump interest -...

King Frederik, who is Denmark’s head of state but does not hold formal political powers, will go to Greenland with Nielsen when the prime minister returns to the Arctic island on April 28. The king last visited Greenland with his wife Queen Mary from June 29-July 6 last year.

The king will visit Nuuk as well as going to Station Nord, a military outpost in the far north, and the Sirius Patrol, a special forces command that uses dog sleds to travel across Greenland’s vast glacier.

US private sector delegation heads to Greenland - ArcticToday

This visit marks the first by a private sector delegation to the Arctic island since the election of Jens-Frederik Nielsen of the pro-business Demokratiit Party as its premier.
The delegation includes representatives from mining firms Critical Metals Corp, Cogency Power, American Renewable Metals and Refracture.

Greenland, with substantial mineral deposits potentially worth trillions of dollars, has a mining sector dominated by Australian, Canadian, and British firms, with limited U.S. investment.

Horn said he believes that capitalization and legitimate private sector growth will facilitate greater collaboration in an independent Greenland backed by U.S. private development.
Horn said he believes Greenland’s openness to private sector investment will bolster its independence and ensure a viable business mode.

EXPLAINER: Why is Greenland a part of the Danish Kingdom?

In a matter of a few weeks in early 1951, a group of Danish senior officials negotiated a wide-ranging agreement on the future defense of Greenland with a visiting American diplomatic-military delegation (“the Agreement” or “the 1951 Agreement”). The Agreement is still in force and has, for nearly 50 years, authorized extensive American defense activities in Greenland. The negotiation of the Agreement has recently been highlighted in a study of Greenland during the Cold War. Grønland under den kolde krig. published by the Danish Institute of International Affairs (DUPI) (DUPI 1997).1 The study was based on full access to all relevant Danish government papers as well as a very extensive documentation found in American archives, including an almost complete set of minutes from the negotiations. The report was therefore able to give a very detailed and exact account of the negotiations. their antecedents, and their general context."

Both the former and present Greenland Government has stated that US companies have the same right to apply for mining permits, or any other form of business permits, in Greenland as any other foreign companies.

It is up to the Greenlanders to decide how they will be governed, who will be their Head of State (Presently the King of Denmark) and who they want to do business with.

Denmark to summon US envoy over report of Greenland spying directive

The Danish foreign minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, said on Wednesday that he was concerned about the report in the Wall Street Journal, telling the Ritzau news agency: “It worries me a lot, because we don’t spy between friends.”

High-ranking officials working under Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, issued the instruction to agency heads in a “collection emphasis message”, the Journal reported.

Gabbard issued a statement saying the newspaper “should be ashamed of aiding deep state actors who seek to undermine the president by politicizing and leaking classified information”.

“The consulate’s main task is to undermine Greenland and especially to undermine the relationship between Denmark and Greenland. That’s not something we have any interest in,” he said. “But certainly not to carry out subversive activities. I find it hard to imagine the Americans would allow that from another country.”

Jarlov believes what is being witnessed is only the tip of the iceberg and that more revelation about U.S. espionage operations in Greenland will come to light in the future.

“It is completely predictable, and more of the same is coming. In the time ahead, they will do everything they can to discredit Denmark’s presence in Greenland and support separatists,” he said. “There will be more and more of this in the near future with the goal of pushing Denmark out, so they can take control of Greenland and ultimately seize all the resources.”

A March 6 poll conducted by Danish newspaper Berlingske showed that 41% of Danes view the U.S. as a serious threat. Denmark’s options for responding to increased U.S. belligerence are quite limited, but politically the focus has been on speaking softly, yet firmly and drumming up EU support. Meanwhile, the small Scandinavian nation has tried to garner sympathy and understanding from Americans.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on Friday said those who believe there is “another kind of legal regime in the Arctic” should be told that “this is not the case.”
Speaking ahead of a Joint Expeditionary Force leaders’ meeting in Oslo, Gahr Støre said there seemed to be suggestions that “in the Arctic, there is some kind of terra nullius, law doesn’t apply.”
“It applies, sovereignty applies. And Greenland is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark,” he said ahead of the meeting with the leaders of the U.K., Nordic and Baltic nations.

The Arctic island rich in minerals, oil and natural gas, and long seen as a potential resource frontier, has drawn international attention since U.S. President Donald Trump expressed an interest in purchasing it earlier this year.

The permit was granted to Greenland Anorthosite Mining (GAM), which is developing a site in western Greenland. The company is backed by French investment firm the Jean Boulle Group and state investment funds in both Greenland and Denmark.

Despite the geopolitical spotlight, Nathanielsen said the U.S.’ interest in Greenland had not yet translated into tangible investment.
“Right now, all the fuss has not resulted in increased appetite for investment directly in Greenland,” she said, referring to Trump’s proposal to buy the island.
“We have welcomed a number of investors, but we have not yet seen any concrete example of American funds being injected into Greenland’s business community,” she said.
Private U.S. business delegations have visited the island since the beginning of the year, but formal dialogue with the new U.S. administration has yet to begin, she said.

The message is clear: “Greenland is open for business, but not for sale”.

Danish EU Commissioner Dan Jørgensen welcomed the move, describing it as a sign of the EU taking global responsibility while strengthening its partnership with Greenland.

“We see ourselves as that connector,” Short said. “On one side, you have Greenland’s talent, land, and culture. On the other, investors looking for stable, sustainable returns in the Arctic. Our job is to bring them together.”

Christiansen closed by reminding the London audience that Greenland’s modernization is no longer hypothetical or distant.
“Ten years ago, we were debating whether to build the airports,” he said. “Now they’re real. Greenland is open for business and open for partnership.”

Saddened, because during a press conference last night, the President of the United States once again expressed a desire to take over Greenland. With such statements, our country is reduced to a question of security and power. That is not how we see ourselves, and it is not how Greenland can or should be spoken about.

We are a people with a long history, a strong culture, and a vibrant democracy. We are a country with responsibility for our own territory and for our own future. Our territorial integrity and our right to self-determination are firmly anchored in international law and cannot simply be ignored.

That is also why I am grateful.
Thank you to everyone here at home for the clear support and unity that has been shown. The calmness and dignity with which you have met this situation send a strong signal of a people who stand firm in their values and in their responsibility.

I would also like to thank heads of government and partners around the world who have clearly and unequivocally expressed their respect for Greenland, for our democratic institutions, and for the fundamental principles of international law. That support confirms that we here at home do not stand alone.
