They are not defenceless, Greenland is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, which is a founding member of NATO, thus entitled to call Article 5, which call for all other NATO members to come to their assistance, if ANY country attack them.
Since USA is a NATO member there is no way USA can attack Greenland, unless it withdraw from NATO.
Maybe Trump could just sign another decree and viola, USA is no long burdened by their membership in NATO (an organization they instigated 80 years ago)?
