Happy new year everyone. NuB here, been reading a long time though.
GOL has given $100 a day to their officers on the 3000 and 6000 ITC boats. Not sure exactly when this happened or what the non licensed crew got. They are also now getting double pay for holidays.
I hope 2012 is as good for everyone else as it is for them.

Double pay for holidays? What kinda socialist crap is that?

I’ve been with GOL for a long time and we’ve always received double pay for 3 holidays. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. I also receive a gift card on my birthday and Christmas. Until last year we enjoyed free health insurance for the entire family but they had to cut something during the hard times and with the rising cost of health care. So now we pay for our families share while the employee is still free.

If the pay is comparable with the other companies in the GOM I would imagine GOL can pick from the best and the brightest with benefits like that. Even the drilling companies don’t pay extra for holidays.
Depends on what you work on. And your experience/credentials. All of our newer stuff is DP. When I left the 100 ton DP boats over a year ago I was right at 400.
I’m beginning to question your intelligence level now more than ever. Ignorance of vocabulary and political economic strategy aside, companies that are paying double time for holidays are many. In fact, numerous drilling companies compensate Seafarers who either choose to or are forced to spend the holidays at sea away from family and friends. Further, as a mariner ( or at least the one you claim to be,) I’m baffled at the very thought of you suggesting this practice is somehow, for whatever reason, unreasonable. I’m certain many folks would be happy to accept the additional pay you are so willing to forgo. Please send to a charity dedicated to educating young people about the idiocy of their elders.
Socialist? The last time I checked the Socialists as in Stalinist type of Socialist did not observe religious holidays only May Day. If you don’t believe me check in to what Mao and Stalin did to the established religions when they took over. So to this product of the public school system I would have to say it is anything but Socialist to pay your people anything you want in order to keep them around. I don’t get holiday pay but would have no problem taking an extra couple hundred around the holidays.

Oh, my gawd. You guys don’t recognize a tongue in cheek comment when you see it. Paid holidays is something the unions have always battled for along with company paid insurance, pensions etc. Yet, unions have been called socialist in the GOM for years. As a proud union member [inactive] I am most happy to see GOL taking the lead here and I hope it pressures others to follow.

I just started here at Hornbeck, but from my understanding, only New Year’s Day and Christmas Day are paid holidays. Everything else is normal pay. There having a lot of people jump ship because other companies are paying better and paying holidays. We shall see what becomes of that.
Guys I’ve been bombarded with PMs looking for info on GOL. All I’ll say is that it’s a great company that still has that small guy feel to it. I’ve worked for a few others at the beginning of my young career including Chouest and after being here close to 10 years I don’t see myself leaving. They’ve been good to me and I’ve in return tried to do a good job for them. Good luck to all who are job hunting.
