Hello my fellow engineers, does anyone know how to tell a fork from a blade without removing the power pack from its case, just by looking at the numbers on the top of the head? Thanks in advance.
You should be able to unlatch the box to inspect it. The box is split. You can’t tell by the numbers on the head.
You should pm cajaya, I’m sure she can tell you.
Its been several years since I worked with EMD’s & attended the school in LaGrange but I’m pretty sure it has to do with the last digit of the Serial # being odd or even. I have it written down in my notes somewhere & if I was going to be assigned to an EMD vessel I would surely bring that notebook with me.
Depending on the engine rotation, on a CCW engine the blade will be on the right bank and the fork on the left bank, on a CW rotation it would be opposite. Or, you can open the crankcase inspection cover and look at the basket.

OK, thanks, that’s what I was looking for, I remember a little about that also. These are packs still sealed and in their clear bags, so to lift them out of their boxes, and check the baskets I would have to tear their packaging. Do you remember if it’s odd or even??

If you lift the cover off the box, you should be able to see or feel under the liner which is the blade and fork rod.
Yeah, tried that. Can’t get around the blocking holding it up.
I don’t remember if it was odd or even & I won’t be able to review my notes for another 2 weeks. Hopefully you have your answer before then. You can try emailing or calling their training centers in LaGrange or North Carolina? I took a two week course in LaGrange 5-6 years ago, the instructor was a French-Canadian fellow who was very pleasent & knowledgable. He told us to call him any time we had any questions. My certificate from their school only has the instructors signature & the printed name of the CEO so do not have the instructors name with me either. Gook Luck.
OK thank you.

Now that’s funny!
I did a quick google and found that for a 645, the Fork Power Assembly Part Number is 8467605 and Blade is 8467606. Does that help? Here is the link. https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunity&mode=form&id=47b05c83bb05e730eb77094ced4b1b17&tab=core&_cview=1 A bit of a further search seems to show that Forks end in odd numbers and Blades in even.
