So what’s the story with EMD engines these days ? Are they still being used in trains and boats ? Have they been banned because of emissions ?
Where might one find a couple used 16 or 20 cylinder 645 or 710s ?
What does it cost to rebuild one ? How much is a power assembly ?
Who are the reputable parts suppliers in the US ?

Holy moly, well, to start CAT makes new EMD engines and they got the parts.
I attended the school linked below in 2010. At that time the factory was connected to the training facility & we could go into the factory to see new 710’s being built & core heads being refurbished to be resold. Some of my classmates were foriegners from Saudi Arabia & Brizil & their companies had just bought scores of new EMD’s for drilling rig generators. Caterpillar had just bought EMD then but the school/factory was still being ran as EMD. I think that changed in 2018 & the buildings are all Caterpillar’ed up now.
Call that old EMD facility or find one of the many EMD forums ran by EMD/Train enthusiasts for more info.

I can locate surplus EMD engines for you but when you say “power assembly” do you mean a genend? If so, are you seeking AC or DC and what voltage output? Lastly, are these to be for marine, rail or stationary use?

I think he probably means a power pack, we always had a couple in boxes aboard along with the torque multiplier, a few gaskets etc. to replace a pack.

You can buy a Tier 4 Emd, I think the last Bouchard boat was Tier 4 Def. Still a fair amount of them around but not like there was, 567B-C boats arent even common anymore. MSI is where they order stuff here, send stuff back to be re-manned. They just sold a boat here with a set of 16E2s and Falk boxes in running shape for not huge money just dont poke the rust holes to hard. It was 10k+ a hole 10yrs ago, last turbo I did in 2017 ? Was 100k+ hot shot from Lagrange, I cant imagine now but its not cheap.
