BST refresher or revalidation question

Is this true? No.

Here’s how you get your answer. It might be hard, but try to follow along.

Look at STCW Code Section A-VI/2 (PSC), paragraphs 6.1 to 6.4 for the things that are met by having sea service. Compare that to the competences in STCW Code Table A-VI/2, and note everything in the table that is NOT in the paragraphs I referred to. This is what parts of PSC cannot be revalidated on a vessel.

Now do the same for Section A-VI/1-1 (BT) paragraph 4.1 Comp[are to Table A-VI/1-1, the difference is what cannot be revalidated “in-service” for BT personal survival techniques.

Now compare the BT revalidation list to that for PSC. You’ll find only one competence for PSC that cannot be met with onboard training and drills (sea service) and revalidating BT: “Operate a survival craft engine.” The NVICs I cited early indicate a decision not to require a PSC revalidation course that only covered starting the lifeboat engine.

Too complicated? Look at Question #6 here, and the “Renewal” section of the NMC checklist for PSC.

I’m done on this subject.

$300 is a fair price.

It seems like most of the profiteering schools (even the ones supported by my tax dollars) want $500 or more. That is really unreasonable when the entire 5 day course is $850.

It’s probably not as simple as a per diem comparison. Perhaps the biggest component of the overhead of a full BT course is the fire field and pool and the equipment used there, all of which are also needed for a 2-day revalidation course.

Excellent point the 850$ school I looked at needs to reserve a day at an off campus Fire Academy and reserve a day at another location for the pool.

Hello.

I am in process of applying for my 7th issue MMC (100T Masters NC) and have had STCW e dorsements. I will no longer be doing international work. Am I able to drop my STCW endorsement and still renew my MMC?

Thanks

I considered the same thing once before I decided to pursue the path to upgrade, but to my understanding as I was educated on no too long ago on this forum; being that your endorsement is under 200grt and you’re on domestic/near coastal routes, STCW is not necessary. I don’t know what your newest issue would say exactly but Im pretty sure your national endorsements wouldn’t be touched ( pending renewal on other endorsements and what’s necessary for you to maintain your 100t ).

You can let the STCW lapse and renew the license. Just make sure you are clear on this to NMC, otherwise it might delay the processing of the renewal, if they are not certain you want to let STCW lapse, they may put you in "awaiting information: and tell you what you need to renew STCW.

Thanks. I appreciate that.

Along the lines of allowing STCW to lapse; what if a mariner has placed their 3rd Mate Unlimited with all the “normal” endorsements (AB, OS, STCW AFF, BT, PISC) in continuity status and they are in the process of activating it; can they only activate the National section, i.e. what is needed to work on a US waters ferry?
