Just graduated the SIU program and im looking for a tug company to work for. Anyone know any good companys to look into on the east coast? I live north of NYC only by about an hour and would commute. Looking for a solid rotation as an STOS. Anyone have any suggestions? Also i plan on getting my AB by the summer and my PIC asap after that.
A job as an ordinary is going to be hard to come by right now. If your willing to take less money, these companys may pick you up,
Dann Ocean, out of Tampa,
Dann Towing, Maryland.
Kirby marine, you can try calling and see if they have any NYC jobs,
Also using the search function on this site, or google will help you avoid irritated responses and THE POINTY STICK.

Thanks brother, new to the forum but appreciate the help! Kirby seems like they are taking over, purchasing a lot of company’s.
STOS… what a joke that is. A union created rating to suck up money from people who don’t know better.
Crowley and OSG are under SIU contract. They’re under Inland contract on the ATBs with an exception or 2. They’re equal time rotation and have utility positions. The last few vettings I went through, the vettors stated they prefered to see STOS as a minimum. Good luck!
Care to explain your comments? What would you recommend doing? Inquiring minds want to know what you mean.

What is an STOS?

From what I can gather, when one comes out of the SIU trainee program on the deck side, They have more than stcw training, life boat, PSC, and 30 days in each department.
It stands for specially trained ordinary seaman. Its some SIU thing they use to get people to go to their school for things they don’t need.

I’m not a union guy or any sort of SIU supporter, but I think this “STOS” they have created is a good idea. Cross training as an entry level OS/wiper is a good thing. In this instance the SIU is doing something right.
PSC is part of the STCW required BST. I don’t see how that alone would be anything extra. However, most schools do offer PSC with liferaft, instead of lifeboat.
The USCG should require that all approved BST courses include full lifeboat. A separate LB endorsement made sense back when all training was conducted onboard, but it no longer makes any sense in this era of required STCW courses.
It stands for Specially Trained Ordinary Seaman, I’m pretty much just an OS but i can stand a look out. I appreciate everyone’s positive feedback but of course you always have someone who is bitter and miserable. Ill have my AB by July/August, i’m just trying to get feedback on company’s and maybe talk to some people about breaking out into the Inland industry.
Tugsailor, on the surface I would agree with you. Training is a good thing. But, these clowns seem to sell it as if STOS were some sort of USCG rating. A number of years back some douche at the SIU tried to get me to go to it and I already had an AB at the time. I knew how the system works with the CG and told him where to stuff it. While it probably does help somebody with training, the way its sold/presented is under handed.

Well, the SIU is a union! What else would one expect?
Union is a strong word for the SIU. More like employment agency.
You people are idiots, STOS is part of the STCW Convention. Not a made up rating by the SIU. Do a little research before opening your mouths!
It’s an old scam to replace (and save $) with a BS rating rather than hire a real AB. Probably was pushed for a union back in the day, so it could have originally been made up by a union.
Keep drinking the kool-aid there dude. It is not a USCG rating. You will never find a MMC with STOS in it.
Just wanted some feedback on how to break into the inland industry, didn’t mean to start a war. Sorry…
Stos is an os with rfpnw
