I just Googled gCaptain News, clicked on the link & it came right up for me, no verification required? It’s probably just internet hocus pocus, I sometimes get a verification screen for all types of sites.

Have to shut down the antivirus or use VPN to open site.
While Forum Shortcut opens w/o problems.

Veryfication issue have encountered at least 3 times

This strange request are random and I just shut down as pishing seems to be everywhere.

Good. It also appears you’re using a tablet so it wouldn’t affect to you anyway.

For those who might not know, on Windows computers the keyboard combination Win(dows button)+R opens the “Run” dialog, Ctrl+V pastes whatever the site has injected to your clipboard into that dialog, and pressing enter runs it. Obviously a good anti-malware software will catch that, so the prompt asks you to ignore it.

What that malware of piece of code does, I have no idea, but it’s safe to assume it’s up to nothing good. A legit website would never ask to carry out those steps.

Tablets, iphones. Laptops and of course on my tablet there is no windows but android so following Windows shortcuts would be " tricky". :zany_face:

Brazen was when I came to relieve him at noon also in English Channel on the way to Fowey Uk, there was nobody on the bridge.
Nobody on the wings and on monkey deck. Vis was good , traffic negligible .Called the chief cook to investigate what happened in hold no 1 as H.C. were half opened. He reported to me the old man is furiously guiding the guys with a stage there as they were painting the hold with aluflex paint to get the holds ready for surveyor .

Back than on coasters we had different priorities ;-). Important thing was vessel was ready for loading w/o offhire. That is when I learned hands on the meaning of ETTO ( efficiency , thoroughness trade off) .

One more thing that was cool back then. We did not rat on each other as ratting on superior officer or even crew member was unthinkable. Me and master run 6on/6off watches at sea and sleep/rest of the reliever was sacred.

Things changed since then as ratting nowadays seems to be a daily bread and written into thickening SMS.

These were the times when the master called office and all office blokes were standing at attention clickig with their heels " YAVOHL HER KAPITAN " and things were done for the ship in two shakes of a lambtail.
Good times and despite harshness ,and exhausting sometimes conditions I remember them fondly.

Sorry for the diverson but what kind of ship carrying what? I was there on a large yacht a few years ago. Fowey is a gorgeous village in a beautiful location but I never saw it as a destination for a merchant ship of any size.

When i saw your comment my first thought was :’ Geeeeez , is this the first signs of my seniority moment dementia kicking in . In coaster tramp trade ( i was ch/mate ) we received orders to places one may not believe they even existed on maps .

The telx says destination Fowey to pick so and so cargo 4000 mt molo , for details contact local agent so and so . The main issue was to have charts and sometimes even w/o adequate scale charts one had to manage.

I remember after unification of Germany we got a contract frm Norway fiords to Rostock hauling ground stones for building new highways in former East Germany.

I do not even remember the name of the place in Norway. We had to find a small "gate " between the rocks and enter it straight from the rolling sea into a TINy rocky bay, where there was a rickety wooden pier with conveyor belt linked to some huge cave in the rocks, where the material was mined for export.
THERE WAS NO EVEN BOLLARDS TO PUT THE LINES ON. We put them on bare ROCK protrusions with the help of small linesman boat. It was navigation and adventure and a wealth of experiences todays SMS branwashed blokes will never comprehend.

But comming back to Fowey the place sank well in my memory due described curious bridge experience but also it was the first time me and bosun had to use anchors to do “bow thruster job” stabilising the bow as the vessel was coming stern in to the pier. I do not remember exactly which of the two cargoes we loaded there but as described before the standard of hold preparation had to be high when it required a surveyor acceptance prior loading.

You came there with the pleasure boat , while I did for commerce. We surely were looking at the place through completely different filters and with a different focus.

But accept my thanks for reaffirming that I am still fine with my memory. :wink:

Thanks for the information. I had no idea there were any facilities for bulk cargo handling, we anchored off the harbor office floats and didn’t go further upriver. My memories of the place are that it could have been the location for filming Doc Martin. I suppose it is good for the local economy but surely the cruise ships will or have destroyed the character of the place.
Tramp coasting in Europe must have been an adventure at times, the closest I ever came (if you exclude Alaska Marine Highway ferries) was tug and barge work between Seattle and Alaska with some relief work on coastal freighters up to the Aleutians that included some loading in SE Alaska bays. We also hauled oil and machinery to isolated logging camps on the west coast of Vancouver Island and far up the BC inlets east of the Inside Passage. Those were adventures.

I went there with these ships :

The first one was dug out from some remote anchorage in Australia where it was rotting filled with scrap. When I joined her she was 13 years old formerly serving as coal carrier on the east coast of Australia. After 1 year of heavy duty maintenance we made her look like a brand new box.

Both ships were Ă–sterreichischer Lloyd with commercial /technical/crewing management in Hamburg
