been putting in applcation like crazy and alot of companies want u to have seatime but i dont. im a wiper just starting and companies r not looking 4 wiper. so if any one no any company that is looking 4 wiper let me no. thanks.
I’m sorry son, I know it is not easy starting out in an industry at the very bottom when every company seems to be demanding more and more which is their right to do. You are just one of at least 50 others who have come on here in the past few months in exactly the same position as you and getting the same results. Normally I get harsh when people come on this board asking the same thing as you are without first doing any searches through past threads but I am not going to this time. My advice is for you to use the seach function and the term wiper, OS, ordinary, new, etc… and see that old threads it brings up for you and read through those threads to learn from all that has been said already many times here in the way of advice and pointers from those who walked in your shoes before.
I also advise you to take a job on any boat you can even a very small boat fishing or charters or dredge tender or whatever where you can use the small vessel sea service form and show the bigger boat companies that you do in fact have some experience and might actually be able to use your time to upgrade your MMC to make you more marketable in the industry.
Can I ask what coast you live near?
Wait for it…

No…I am serious this time. I don’t know why I am now soft on this one, but for some reason I don’t want to take this guy apart. Maybe his writing is so pathetic that somehow I feel he might actually deserve to be helped. Let’s see if our fellow comes back and how he replies.
Sorry if I’m disappointing some here but rest assured if he does show his colors to be the same as BoZo the Clown’s then I will muvilate da bum!
Lol, I must admit, I was waiting to hear u let someone have it
The new medication must be working pretty good!!
The new medication must be working pretty good!!:)
hopefully not too good…it would be a terrible loss to the entertainment value of gCaptain! Imagine what would happen here if I suddenly became all “touchy & feely”?
anyway, our guy isn’t back so we don’t know yet if he’s a lost soul in need of our help or a lost soul in need of a boot to the back of his pants?
alot of you guys have already been put in hr and move up its not like we r not out here trying, just tring 2 see a good way get on to. how did u move from a wiper to where u at now
eastcoas. not looking 4 a hand out but wisdom from guys been working on a boat and been threw the same thing
eastcoas. not looking 4 a hand out but wisdom from guys been working on a boat and been threw the same thing
as I recommended to you before…go through older threads in this forum and read all of them from at least the past year if not longer to learn without us having to teach you. Then as I recommend, go look for a job on any boat you can. I don’t know which part if the east coast you are on, but wherever there is water there are boats so just find a rust chipper, bilge cleaner, pot scrubber job on any of them ie. not with any big companies. Look to the mom and pop companies. The money will not be good and the work hard but you will be able to tell the bigger companies in 6 months that you do have experience and if you use a small vessel sea service form you might get credit for the time you are working. Are there fishing charters where you are? If so, I’d go there to see if anybody might need a part time hand. Any companies doing marine construction might have a workboat tending piledrivers and need a guy to do dirty work. It’s not what you do specifically that matters. What matters is if the work is on a boat!
When you do get a job on a boat then WORK YOUR ASS OFF, because you are starting a career and if you intend to make it a career then start it RIGHT!
good luck to you…come back and tell us what you find
Grammar and spelling are important too.
Grammar and spelling are important too.
I am guessing he is foreign. Hopefully nobody’s spelling is that bad.
Ironicily 904 in his user name is the Jacksonville Fl. area code= east coast
Lol, yes, that is jacksonville. But jaaon, look through some of the old threads, and you will really get every answer u will need in finding a job, good luck, ooh also, please be patience, it gets hard but faith and laughter ( from A certain person from g captain, im not gonna say any names but I will say this he was the first person to respond and have captain in his name ) will get you through

No experience needed at this outfit: http://www.sealiftcommand.com/engine-utilityman
I was in the same boat, pun intended, a few years back. NOAA Is always hiring Wipers. You need 180 days of sea time at NOAA and then you can get your QMED. NOAA is a fun outfit and I miss it everyday. I would of never left if the pay was better.

The only job at MSC that doesn’t require experience is Supply Utilities (Maid Services) . Even the entry level Wipers and OSs require Ratings Forming part of an Engineering or Navigational watch. You still need sea time and experience.

Yep,I stand corrected, RFPEW is required. However,I hired on in Sep 2010 and there were folks without RFPNW in the NEO and several OSs were working on their RFPNW quals books on my ship. They were hired into MSCs OS to AB Advancement Program, a job announcement which is not presently open.

You are correct. They do have ABs and OSs without BST or RFPNW. I went to a BST class at the San Diego MCS with a bunch of AB MSC employees. They were all transferred from Supply Utilities. The Advancement Programs still exists but for MSC members only and the announcement on their internal site still required sea time and experience. The last Advancement Program board results just came out last week.
This means there will be 30 plus openings coming up with Supply Utilities before the Fall months. For some, including me, making beds and cleaning toilets while waiting for advancement is better than being continually unemployed.
Ummm I got hired in two months ago on the OS advancement program… You get the bst and rfpnw training at msc training center.
