What's up here?

anyone else getting 404 error messages repeatedly?

On the app I was getting a lost connection to server error message randomly the last few days.

I’m pretty much blocked out and getting constant 404 messages. Once in awhile I manage to slip through a backdoor

Not sure about the 404 messages, but we’re migrating our server to the cloud. Flipping the switch today.

The forum is sticking with our current Rackspace server, which will provide far more capacity than needed. This should mean no more server busy messages. John can elaborate.

Yes, we outgrew our server and have been working hard the last couple of weeks to upgrade our hardware. The blog section of our site is now on a cloud server us to dedicate our professional grade Rackspace server to this forum… this should significantly reduce (if not eliminate completely) the “server overload” message that some of you have been seeing. It should also make the forum load faster.

We just pushed the update a few hours ago, so expect some minor bugs over the next few days… then increase speed and stability in the days that follow!

Is there a problem with the Android App? I get the following message:

Error
The remote server sent an unknown response. This could be a result of the forum software plugin being outdated or having a conflict.

Thanks,

Brian

The gcaptain computers are totally FUBAR

Last night was the first time I could sign in in a few days. It kept telling me my user name and password were no good. Everything seems okay now.

Yeah, finally managed to sign in today. Android app keeps saying what Brian said above, not sure if that’s still a no-go. And on the main forum, every time I tried to sign in, it kept telling me I was trying to log in with an invalid password, that I’d tried to log in too many times and I’d been locked out. Aaaaand, I got an interesting email from gCaptain a couple days ago–“Someone has tried to log into your account on gCaptain Forum with an incorrect password at least 5 times…blah blah blah…The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address:…” I won’t give the actual IP address here, not sure why it would make a difference but suffice it to say the IP address is apparently located in New Jersey–I’m in Washington state. So, someone trying to hack my account, or server issues?

Anyway, I suppose a few bugs were to be expected with the great gCaptain transition, hopefully they’re ironed out now.

I have been getting the same error message for a few days. No access with my phone app. Uninstalled, reinstalled. No joy.

My desktop PC gets logon errors, password wrong, 404 cannot find the forum, etc. By clicking on the link at the bottom of the 404 message I can eventually get on, but the New Posts button does not work. I cannot open the chouest getting raises thread, but the others open ok.

However, my iPad works normally.

We are looking into this and the android issues… stby

Same here.

John,

I have not had any problems signing on when I am using my Lap Top, but I can not and have not been able to sign in using my Android phone. Just a thought I has an update come through for the operating system on my phone so maybe the gcaptain app does not like the new update.

No its a computer problem at gcaptain. My desktop still does not work properly. I’m sure they get it sorted out in due course.

Over the last few days, gcaptain has been about as quiet as I have ever seen it.

Has everyone run out of things to talk about, or is this quiet period a result of the ongoing computer problems at gcaptain?

I couldn’t help but feel that for the last few weeks things seemed tense. There seemed to be a lot of highly contentious stuff being discussed and I thought quite a few people, myself included, had gotten their dander up. This thought entered my mind when someone called John something along the lines of “a poor excuse for a journalist”. My suspicions were further reinforced when two separate people said that it was a joke to say that the gCaptain forum was made up of “professional” mariners. I wonder now if things are quiet because people have become tired of getting angry at each other on the internet. Maybe we just all need a rest.

I very strongly disagree with both of the statements above, that John and his friends are not journalists and that gCaptain does not posses any “professional” mariners. I guess at this point we’ll just have to wait for something really super interesting to happen in the news again so that everyone can forget about what ever the fought over in the last month or so and start discussing again. That is provided of course, that someone doesn’t come along and call us all a bunch of assholes again. Here’s to hopin’!

This seems to be an accurate analysis. I’ve not had any more trouble logging on than usual. I was particularly annoyed in that one thread where the guy called John a poor excuse for a journalist. I’ve always seen the news articles on the site as informative, professional, and objective.

Everyone is on armslist spending their raise money…

I did that already but it was bonus money not a raise. I bought a Caesar Guerini Summit Assent over and under. Now to get him again and break some more clays with it!
