What's the last job you'd take at sea?
F me. I would rather swim in an MSD then clean those.
We had one cook that had a special talent to plug the microphore system. One trip we had to back flush the line several times. The (not so steady) OS was called out for “easy OT” to clean up the head. He was starting to change shades of green when he saw the mess. He says, “You mean I have to clean up everyone’s shit”?? My assistant, already splattered with shit, says “I’ll give you a break”. He reaches down, picks up a big turd and drops it in the bucket. He says “There, I took care of mine, you got the rest”! The OS hurled and disappeared for 3 days. I think he gave up his sea-going career after that hitch.

Anytime raw shit needed to be cleaned up on any of my vessels I always offered extra pay double the number of hours actually worked. You’d be amazed what some people will endure for FREE money!

I am already reconsidering being here although I’ll probably stay a year…like I said above, OT was cut, mine cut from 4 hours to 2 per day underway and they want to deduct a half hour for a meal break, actually giving me 1.5 hours OT per day. I suspect with the budget impasse it will only get worse. The licensed lost all OT. This is due to budget cuts.

Being female, they house me on the science deck and I share quarters with people who are not mariners, and do not comprehend rest rules or respect day sleepers. My roomate has already asked me if coming in and out of the room during the day will bother me. When I am on watch and working I stayed out of the room for 12 hours…why can’t she? My last one turned off the thermostat every day because she was “cold” and when I knocked off in the morning it was an 80 degree swamp- in the GoM that’s not good unless you like mildew. I had to explain to her that the thermostat worked just like the one at home- turn it up a little if you are cold- don’t turn it off!

Here in this particular port you need a cab to get anywhere, but the galley did not serve Mon and Tues of this week and those were work days for us.

There are good points also- I’ve met some delightful people- but I have a lot to think about. My immediate goal is licensing as soon as possible.

I dunno. Probably anything in the steward dept. on a DSV. F…n divers!
Let’s just saw I was known to be a prick to work for. The always complained about me having the nerve to want them to actually work.
Yeah, I used to have the same problem. I had one walk off before the gangway was secured. In fact, he called a cab and was on his way to the airport before the pilot got off. . . . . good riddance.

When I think of the worst jobs I’ve done, the question is not what but…

Where?
The worst job that first comes to mind was busting ice on deck but worse than that was mucking mud tanks clad in tyvek & respirators near the equator.

Or Who!?
I worked for one Scottish prick who ironed his coveralls, wore white gloves on deck and thought he was royalty. He also liked to camp out at the hatch coamings and watch us muck tanks. I’d rather clean the MSD with my toothbrush than work on the playboy yacht with that guy in charge

Or When!!?
I’d volunteer for all of the above and some before I’d ever clean another shit pipe rupture when heavy weather hits.

(P.S. The only good thing about cleaning shit during a storm is that you don’t notice the smell when then guy next to you pukes  )
