What's New in the Tug and Barge World?

“Asymmetric Tractor”

it looks the “Ship Docking Module “ tugs that Erik Hvida had built 25 years ago (they went to Signet). One Z drive forward on one side and another Z drive aft on the opposite side. Nothing new about this concept.

However, the overall design, equipment, and fit out of this tug looks much much better.

No tugs (or ships) are built for beauty these days.
If you want beauty you have to look at least 30 years back in time.
Like these two:

Wolraad Woltemade & John Ross - The Great South African Ocean Salvage Tugs

Both now sadly gone to the breakers.

PS> I worked with both of those in their prime.

PS> The article is probably written by somebody without much understanding of how things work in the real world.
Then for the next step:

30 years? What do I have to do to get on such a new tug?

Or these two:

Their unique heavy lift ro/ro barge Terra Marique has become the first commercial vessel to transit the river Forth through the iconic Kincardine and Clackmannanshire bridges on route to Alloa,

The largest piece being 56m in length, 6m in diameter and weighing 187te. All cargo was loaded onto specialist transport provider Mammoet SPMT’s and rolled off in an offloading operation that took less than 90 minutes to complete.

Timings on this project were critical as navigation through the bridges was planned to the minute due to the tidal variations on the Forth and in particular, the two bridges.

kept showing the engines but where were the batteries ?

Looks like the “hybride” part is that the shaft generators can be used as booster motors when max BP is required:

Maybe this should have been posted on the Veteran ships thread?
Since it is about a tug performing an epic voyage right now, it probably belongs here:

Anybody feel the urge to comment?

The tugboat guys on the forum gave a collective shrug. Long trip for sure, but old boats like that are doing it and more with bigger tows every day. Pictures indicate a crew of 5, so the skipper and mate were going 6 and 6, but at least they got cool new cold weather costumes out of it. Unless they have to leave them on the boat when they de-crew. Come to think of it, I wonder if the crew knew they were going to Antarctica when they went aboard. The chief’s suspicions were raised when he saw how many racors the shore staff put aboard. :slightly_smiling_face:

Does anyone know about Seaside LNG (tugs Polaris and Tortuga) are their mates SIU?

Great trip. I’d have loved to have done it.

Tradewinds and its owners are real tugboat people with good reputations. Guys seem to like working for them. The boat may be vintage, but I’m sure they wouldn’t send her unless they were very confident that she was up to the voyage.

This is an “EPIC” ocean voyage for an American tugboat.

Second mate and a WiFi connection and that would be a blast. 6 and 6 and sending Iridium phone emails once a day? Count me out, the 90s are long over
