Vessel / E-R Resource management Training

Took the MEECE class at MPT last week. They use 3 instructors who rotate through the day. The death by power point part follows verbatim with the textbook. There will be 100 items of note over the 4.5 days of the class. At the end they give a 50 question test requiring 70% to pass. They have two tests they draw from so the guy next to you wont have the same test. This is why you have 100 items of interest to rememberize. I managed to stay awake for most of it and it was mostly a review of things you already know having taken CG tests. My first took it at Star and he said it was a little more dry. His instructor was determined to read every word from every slide with little deviation.

Sounds like no matter what school, the concensus is about the same regarding MEECE.
I’m happy I only have ERM to worry about now…knocking that out in april…

I was in that same class, and can only echo Fraqrat’s comments. Might want to ad MPT is a nice facility, but after finishing all 3 required classes, my personal opinion is the entire thing was real close to a waste of time. It was nothing but a review of things everyone with a license should already know.

By the way it was good to finally meet you in person Fraqrat.

I was at MAMA taking ERM last week. It was combined with the leadership course for lower level licenses. You get two certificates.

They just got approval for their MEECE course. The old simulator is coming out, as well, to be replaced by a newer model with touchscreens. They will be using the simulator in the course, I believe.

See, now that makes some sense considering what the criteria for both courses are. When I did my leadership course last summer at the school I go to, we were out everyday around 1400 and on friday around noon. Seemed like the instructor did his best to stretch it out. ERM is my last one so I can’t personally speak regarding how heavy it is, but merging those sounds efficient.

Yeah that caught me pleasantly by surprise, because I was thinking I had to take a separate class. I’m a 3A/E so I don’t need the management level stuff just yet.

The guy who taught the class is a retired MSC C/E. I knew him from my previous job as a contractor. There was a lot of PP, but he tried to make it interesting by keeping the class engaged. There was some simulator time as well, to demonstrate the importance of clear communications. I thought it wasn’t a bad class. It was interesting at times. Gave me a lot of food for thought.

He gave homework assignments from the book and there was a test at the end.

I’m going to recommend this to anyone who hasn’t taken it yet…sign up asap because the classes fill up fast. We had about 24 people in my class. You don’t want to put this off till the last minute.

I will recommend the MEBA online class. It’s two weeks and all done from my iPad or iPhone. One proctored test at the end. It counts for both leadership and ERM

That sounds like a nice option for people who can’t get away. I just joined as an applicant. I’ll have to see what else they offer online.

A course isn’t required for the operational level Leadership & Teamwork requirement, it can be done in assessments on a vessel.

But many schools also include it in the ERM course, and if you think you might’ve going for a raise in grade to the management level in the next 5 years, the management level course might be better as it also covers the operational level and can be used for the future raise in grade.

I’ll be looking to advance as far as I can get in the next several years, but just wanted to get in under the wire for the time being. I am renewing in 2016 and need to see what else I need to take as far as refreshers.
