Hi, so I ripped a tendon in my leg into two pieces and had surgery 8wks ago. I’ve been doing physio for 6wks with more scheduled. The Dr has said I have no limitations other than explosive sports & running, those don’t come until 9-12months after surgery. Been working out and doing 2.5mile walks no problem. I honestly feel I could go back to my previous boats without issue, other than being a bit slower than normal. My medical cert is due in August and I’m curious if the USCG will have any issues with this. Any thoughts or experiences?
I had a lobe of one lung removed, major surgery. After two months I was doing very well and had a USCG physical due for a renewal. Went to my doctor who was familiar with USCG requirements, told him about it and he had me do some basic movements and signed off. I don’t remember the exact wording but it was something like, had surgery [named the surgery] and he has no limitations that I observed. That was about it. Because I was on medical leave the company sent me to a doctor that was much more demanding due to them worrying about increased insurance costs. At any rate I passed the USCG renewal and got a new license so even if the company rejected me [they did not] I could have gotten a job.My philosophy was don’t tell the USCG examiner any more than they ask for and be conservative about what you say. In your case I would say I feel fine and get around like before. I would not volunteer that it may be another month or so before you are ready to compete in a 100 yard dash.
Did USCG ask for anything else or was the 719k enough?
Thanks. I will get my Dr and my PT to write a quick letter, was going to do that anyway. Just not sure if the medical examiners would have issue and want extra info. I’ve seen far less fit people than me on boats in the past.
Yea…they don’t know what you don’t tell them.
I tore a ligament a while back. After the surgery, recovery, and six months PT, my surgeon wrote a note clearing me. Then the company made me go to their designated clinic and go through a whole physical exam and physical fitness test to be cleared for them. So when I filled out the next CG medical I checked the “Yes” box on Surgery, handed the Doctor all the file notes, and they just wrote Treatment: Reconstruction Surgery on X date; Status: Full recovery, no restrictions; Limitations: None.
