I have recently got my Masters 100 ton licence and I want to upgrade to either 200 tons or 500 tons, but I’m finding all the information for what I need a little confusing. I currently work on a super yacht of 846 GRT as first mate. I have currently 902 service days which half of these are actual sea days (4 hours or more underway). Can I upgrade to my 500 tons or do I need to upgrade for my 200 ton first? Also what else do I need to take to complete the upgrade? When it says total service days does that mean days on the boat or is that only counted if underway for more than 4 hours?
How are you first mate of a vessel with 846 GRT with only a 100 ton?
You must have some time ON your license, serving on the capacity of your license. As was pointed out, you are not actually serving as a ‘legal’ mate in the capacity of your license so this time only counts towards the seatime requirements. This is a common problem when advancing past 100 ton. It takes actual time on a license. You are not actually a mate. You are a deckhand.
I am under the impression , perhaps I am wrong, that yachts over 300 GRT require licensed officers.
Anything self propelled over 300grt has to have a licensed crew…maybe stipulations based on registry/route Etc but as a rule if its over 300 you need to be licensed for proper tonnage. There are all kinds of STCW and SOLAS conventions dealing with large yachts within the common yacht flag states.
Otherwise all the OMSA companies would be classing their Osv’s as yachts.

I thought Yachts did not have to carry Licensed people. If I am not mistaken that is how those Assholes on the Sea Shepard Boats get away with it. Maybe it’s Private Yachts.
NMC will certainly raise the issue that others have done here of the tonnage of the vessel and the tonnage of your license.
To anticipate a possible response of “I wasn’t required…”, consider that in a recent appeal of an NMC decision denying acceptance of time on a yacht, CG HQ contacted the flag of the vessel and ascertained that by their laws, a license appropriate to the tonnage of the vessel was required, and thus the vessel was illegally manned and the time was not accepted.

Go for a 1600 ton mate license.
If someone is upgrading from 100T Master N/C to 200T Master N/C, do the sea service forms have to account for service on vessels under 200T in order to upgrade?
If yes, what are the specifics of min/max and days counted, i.e. 101T - 200T, 151T - 200T.
If the upgrade to 200T is the person’s agenda, what is the best type of vessel to work on while holding a 100T to meet the sea service requirements for the 200T upgrade, accounting for tonnage, course (ocean or N/C) and the best actual job, regarding desired experience and future marketability.
100T to 200T upgrade: Can someone have useless sea service because the vessel was over 200 Tons? And, can they work as an AB on a container ship, obviously being a wee bit over 200T.
Any and allaccurateresponses will be very much appreciated. Thanks
