PS: My first visit to Shenzhen was in 1972, passing through on the way to/from Whampoa (now Huangpu).
At that time “downtown” Shenzhen looked like this:
Development of Shekou Industrial Zone, part of Shenzhen, started already in 1979. Deng Zhaoping’s “Opening Door” policy and his visit in 1984 really got development going in Shekou and the rest of Shenzhen.
By than there were regular ferry service from Hong Kong.
Shekou was the administrative center for the offshore oil & gas development off Peral River Delta.
Since then I have visited Shekou and the rest of Shenzhen many times, both for business and pleasure. The contrasts from my first to my last visit (2015) reflects the changes I have witnessed first hand over the last 65 years in China. Only more rapid and stark in Shenzhen.
Have discovered after a very prief period of active participation and years of passive reading ,that anderstanding this forum rules is more challenging that understanding China. Just saying.
