Already in 1978-80, when I was Captain on a drillship owned and operated by an American company, we had no Americans in the crew. (Except a Welder, but he had lived in Singapore for several years and later run his own company there)
Of course there were Americans on board as Company me, Service hands etc.
Estimated?? Don’t the US Statistics Bureau and/or State Department know how many passports are in existence and held by whom?
I presume your 42% come from this Jan. 2017 Forbes article (or in other publications):
In fact that has now increased to abt. 45% according to Travel.Stat.Gov (Do the math): Reports and Statistics
It doesn’t say how many of the valid passports are issued to dual citizens that is actually residing in other countries (like Hongkeys, Mainland Chinese, or Middle Easterns etc. that is hedging their bets)
As to % of Norwegians holding passports and how many travel abroad;
Sorry I can’t find any statistics of the number of valid passports or % of holders.
Norway is part of EEA (Not EU) and of the Schengen Agreement, thus no passport is required for travel in most of Europe, which many Norwegians do, at least once or twice a year. (I don’t think you need to ask why)
The Norwegian passport is ranked 4th “Best” passport to hold (jointly with UK, US, Australia, Luxembourg and The Netherlands) when it comes to visa free travel. (Germany and Singapore is joint 1st).
As you undoubtedly know the US issue travel warnings and country information in the world (except USA) I was curious what the warnings would be for US Citizens travelling in Norway;
Not much and nothing at present.
The Safety and Security section talk about terrorist threats in Europe in general, but doesn’t mention the major threat in Norway; Right wing extremists and anti-Muslim groups.
I see you are still on the Viking high horse that was made in China.
If it were not for the Chinese fear of new US sanctions, Beijing would have already given the HK protesters the Tininamin Square treatment, a machine gun bullet through the head, and a tank track on their back.
The US is the only thing protecting the HK democracy protesters.
You should visit America again. It’s getting to be a sea of foreign language speakers with fewer English speakers.
As you can see from the above quote and the detailed statistics, US travel outside USA is 0.20 per pers/yr, while Norwegians travel 2.00 trips abroad per year.
The most travelling is Hongkeys, but that is because trips to China is counted as “outbound”, since the border between Shenzhen and HK requires passport control.
If the trips Norwegian take to Sweden and Denmark to buy cheap booze, groceries and meat was counted the number would skyrocket. (Some makes the trip every week, if not more)
Driving across to the large Swedish malls near the border that cater mainly to Norwegian doesn’t even involve any form of border check. The only thing that tells you that you are now in a foreign country is that road and street names are spelled differently.
PS> You see quite a lot of cars, both in HK and Shenzhen, that carry dual number plats. They belong to people that hold special pass and drive back and forward for business (or live on one side and work on the other) almost daily
That will not show up in the above statistics.
Based on what reliable source of information?? Oh it is a belief and thus does not need any proof, is it?
That is more accurately what keeps them believing that they can go on destroying their own country. If some realism could replace fear of a rising China in US policy, the situation would have died out from lack of support from the domestic population.
I see NZ made it to 7th. When we travel we really travel. We regard a 3 hour flight to Australia or pacific islands as a weekend trip. Most destinations are more than 10 hours by air.
The long distances to just about anywhere may be the reason that most Kiwis prefer to travel in their own country.
If you want to experience Norwegian fjords, go to Fiordland on South Island, it is almost the same.
Likewise, if you want to see Norther Light (Aurora Borealis), why travel all the way to the Arctic when you can see the Southern Light (Aurora Australis) from Stewart Island, a short ferry ride from Bluff?
Thus only 0.4 Kiwis make a foreign trip per year, while 3.4 travel domestically. (How an 0.4 Kiwi look like is a mystery, but twice as big as an 0.2 American I would imagine)
Saying Americans don’t want to travel internationally is misleading.
I think the big reason Americans don’t travel as much internationally is because we don’t get much time for vacation. What’s the use of having a passport if you don’t get a chance to use it? Roughly one in four Americans don’t get time off for vacation. Those that do only use half of their time. Even those that get vacation time don’t use it for vacation, they use it as a day off here and there for things like getting the car fixed or to go to a wedding or funeral.
I’d argue the passport statistic is misleading. Figure if roughly 75% of Americans get vacation time and roughly 45% have passports then a very rough estimate could be that 60% of Americans who can holiday have passports. If you then factor out the non-vacationers (car, wedding, funeral) I’d bet the percentage of American passport holders rivals European countries.
The woman I’ve met here is German. She’s on a year long sabatical from her job with a shipping company (she’s in finance, not a mariner). Its just amazing that someone can take a year off and travel without loosing their job (or their health insurance). Same for the Hong Kong Brit. He just takes a few months off because of rioting. In the States you’d be expected to go to work even if you had to pass threw the riots.
In fact I haven’t knowingly spoken to another American in at least a week. There just aren’t any around. When I’m asked how long I’ll be abroad and I tell people two weeks many people express suprise that I’m here for such a “quick holiday.” Hah!
Its not that Americans don’t want to travel internationally. It’s just that, all things considered, it’s difficult.
No vacation is the big thing.
You also dont see American students around the world taking time off, thats easy with free education but not so when you pay
Unless you’re in China…then you need to do so “within certain limits”. Or, as the US Department of State puts it:
“U.S. citizens may be detained without access to U.S. consular services or information about their alleged crime. U.S. citizens may be subjected to prolonged interrogations and extended detention for reasons related to “state security.” Security personnel may detain and/or deport U.S. citizens for sending private electronic messages critical of the Chinese government.”
(emphasis added)…so yeah, about your advice to speak free and easy…
Some of the highlights (from multiple sources of this story):
Pompeo said it’s time to realize “the degree to which the Communist Party is hostile to the United States and our values”
"China’s Communist Party leaders have made clear that they want to achieve primacy in the world,” Pompeo said.
“It is no longer realistic to ignore the fundamental differences between our two systems, and the impact that these differences may have on the United States.”
“We’ve been slow to see the risk China poses to American national security because we wanted friendship with the People’s Republic from the very start. We still hope for it…But, in our efforts to achieve this goal, we accommodated and encouraged China’s rise for decades – even at the expense of American values, and security, and good sense."
“We did everything we could to accommodate China’s rise, in the hope that Communist China would become more free, market-driven, and ultimately, hopefully, more democratic…We did this for a long time.”
“Above all, we as Americans must engage China as it is, not as we wish it to be,” he said.
FINALLLLLLYYYYY…SOMEBODY in power has the balls to put into words what is so obviously going on
Other countries issue travel warnings for USA as well:
There are also frequent complains about foreigners arrested in the US not being permitted to contact their Embassy/Consulate and harsh treatment by Police and in jails.
But of course you do not want to “believe” anything reported in foreign media, or reports in international forums.
PS> The Hill report is about a special situation. There are more than that in the warnings issued by various countries.
The Pompeo statement just show the toxic anti-China sentiment that is being stirred up in the US. Unfortunately it is not being countered enough by more levelheaded people without a political agenda. When you have trouble at home, find an outside enemy. The oldest trick in the book.
So is changing the subject. Where’s the part about may detain and/or deport U.S. Chinese citizens for sending private electronic messages critical of the Chinese U.S. government.?
