Transition to MMP or AMO or MEBA

Common topic on here so if anyone has general thoughts please let me know but one main question:

If you have Unlimited Master license do you go into MMP as a C book? AMO as a entry level/equivalent?

Yup.

MEBA is a much better landing spot. If you have Master time expect to be back sailing Master soon. If the pass thru goes away in 2025 there will be 3 more container ships that need senior officers. The way MMP and MEBA are getting along these days, this is most likely going to happen. Liberty will need a few as well if the MMP folks depart. MEBA also has by far the best pension

Didn’t mean to leave MEBA out in the post, they definitely seem like a good spot to look. Don’t have the Master experience but would sail cm or 2m for a bit and it sounds like MEBA would be able to provide that with opportunity to keep sailing management level.

MMP is not interested in continuing the passthrough. But MEBA is still attempting to get a fair deal but it’s now expected that it is highly likely the 4 express containerships are going to enter the MEBA job pool. There are already senior deck officers on at least one of the 4 containerships that are MEBA so there might be only 3 ships that MEBA has to find MEBA senior officers for.
There’s already MEBA mates waiting/wanting to work on those ships. There are officers on the pass through that will probably take some of those senior jobs.
Also those ships are switching to the west coast and a getting a pay bump as a result.

In short don’t count on there being openings for long when the MMP officers leave.

Do you anticipate the senior officer climate at MEBA being light as far as job openings? A lot of people waiting on jobs? Trying to get an idea, I know it changes so quickly so it’s almost useless to speculate.

Interesting how you hear about senior officer shortages but in reality the only ships in need are just … the terrible ships haha.

A few but MMP officers have never been able to fill permanent positions on Liberty vessels so it’s not like the express ships. But there probably will still be some openings occasionally before MEBA sends them to AMO. I guess the MEBA-AMO passthrough has been working out for the most part.

I don’t anticipate it being light but I also don’t anticipate companies being crazy desperate either when we take those express ships back. Theres always senior officer jobs that pop up for relief or perm. But I don’t think MEBA is going to continually struggle to fill all those containership jobs. More so in the beginning to fill them but then you got the permanent in the spot so that’s it.

Always helpful, MEBADeckie!

Yeah, No. There is a severe shortage of Meba sr deck officers. The numbers in last month’s meeting packet don’t tell the real story about how many jobs actually get filled in the pass thru on mmp ships. Also, the plan that the DEC has to fill the container ship jobs isn’t a good one and speaks volumes.

MEBA AMO pass thru is supposed to be for engineers only correct?

There is opportunity now and the future looks bright for deck officers in MEBA at all positions.

Not according to the press release from AMO.

AMO- MEBA pass through.

  • MEBA can pass through deck jobs to the AMO
  • AMO can pass through engine and deck jobs to the MEBA

MEBA has passed deck jobs through to AMO and they’ve been filled by AMO. AMO has passed through engine jobs to MEBA and they’ve been filled by MEBA. Never seen a deck job get passed through from AMO to MEBA but the option is technically there if AMO can’t fill it.

A lot of MEBA Deckies were happy at the last union meeting for sure. But I’m surprised that MEBA leadership reached out to MMP during the OSG organizing to work together offering MMP the ability to let the OSG deck guys be part of the MEBA pension. So OSG guys would get MMP A book and MEBA pension and it would also help them secure their first contract. But MMP said no!

Rumor has it that MMP did this because their plans is not financially in a good spot and they knew MEBA wanted a fair pass through agreement and would loose the big $$$$ subsidizing by MEBA. Just sucks for the OSG guys who will get MMP partial pension or none all.
