I sure hope so… I’m still waiting for your chipotle recipe!!
I have to say most of the time I skipped past the comments from either one of them. Just got tired of seeing the same types of responses/comments from. Not to say some of their input wasn’t good, but their ban won’t affect me or my time on here at all.
So why sit at that table? No one forced you to read his posts, if you read them and didn’t find them interesting or entertaining then so be it, you didn’t pay for the experience and did not have to finish reading the posts.
The same goes for those “people logging complaints”, was there some cost associated with those complaints? Did they keep advertisers away? Did readership drop? Is there some loss of something - anything - associated with the complainers? Let them complain, they obviously don’t have much else to do or think about if a post on an internet forum impacts them so much they are compelled to complain to management.
Geez, talk about snowflakes. The USMM is nearing the finish line of the race to the bottom and those who can’t handle reading a dose of nonsense once in a while want to define verbal discourse down to some milquetoast medium of politically correct and intensely boring mediocrity. What is our world coming to?
Pretty simple…
Long time listeners few time speaker here, unlimited CE since mid 2000s if it matters. It doesn’t matter most other places it seems.
In my mind CCaptain is the crazy but knowledgable chief I went ashore to the bar to escape for a few hours. Ombugge is the jackass who I nodded hello to at said bar on the way in and then came over and wouldn’t leave me alone about fucking politics even though I minded my business and tried to be left alone. He passive-aggressively spilled my drink and called the police on me when I tried to leave.
Everyone on board was mystified when I came back more stressed than when I left.
As one who used to post anonymously, I can say there is self-regulation when posting under your own name. Having attribution in an industry as small as ours, where the usual banter when you meet someone is, “What ships have you sailed on and who have you sailed with?” is pretty important. Voicing opinions (or harassing people) anonymously that you might not want attributed to you does not lend itself to friendly discourse. Whoever c.captain and ombugge are in real life, they would likely not have the same conversations or comments as they’ve had behind the shield of a pseudonym.
IDK Rich, have you read any of the comments on gCaptain’s FB page lately?
Ombugge’s name is O. M. Bugge.
The biggest concern we have, and why we lobbied John to keep this forum instead of switching to something like Facebook, is there are a lot of lurkers reading comments and not all of them have the best motivations. This is supposed to be a place where we can give the unfiltered truth about companies and captains we’ve sailed with but the fact that anyone can read through the posts at any time makes that impossible to do if we all had to use our real names.
Oddbjorn Mauritz Bugge in long form.
Both have been very liberal with personal information so I don’t think they care that people know who they are.
Scooter just didn’t know when to pull the throttles back. Thank’s John for keeping the Forum going because I really hate Facebook.
Speaking as someone who was on the internet before it was the internet, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to maintain a professional forum such as this and not let it become swallowed by scam that is Facebook. The reason for this is simple: the forum provides a searchable archive of expertise and Facebook does not.
Please do not let this site go the way of a much lamented drillers site that I used (along with gCaptain) as a powerful resource when researching the Macondo blowout. Then somebody put up a Facebook group that covered the the same topics. Questions are asked, questions answered, exchanges vanish. No topic organization, no search, no posterity. Killed the other forum dead. Please don’t let that happen here.
As far as the two characters are involved, as someone who has been a moderator I think you have to have limited patience with those who persist in off-topic axe grinding and personal attacks. Otherwise the signal to noise ratio drops to the point where the people you want to attend drop out. I remember one guy we had to throw off a specialist forum for the usual lapses. He was a true expert in the field but (as I noted from checking logs) just about every time he posted after the cocktail hour he’d go off on some tear or another and finally it became too much.
Cheers,
Earl
Excuse me?
He might have been out at sea!
Talk not to me of blasphemy, man; I’d strike the sun if it insulted me. For could the sun do that, then could I do the other; since there is ever a sort of fair play herein, jealousy presiding over all creations.
But not my master, man, is even that fair play. Who’s over me? Truth hath no confines. Take off thine eye! More intolerable than fiends’ glaring is a doltish stare!
What feels good is not always the smart play. “We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.”
You come home, make some tea, sit down in your armchair and all around there’s silence. Everyone decides for themselves whether that’s loneliness or freedom…
Too bad about both ccaptain and Ombugge
