The ship docking majors in Philadelphia and Baltimore did this often dating back to the late eighties after the SIU strikes.
But, they called it a “day off without pay”. That way, you couldn’t bump anyone when your boat was tied up.
A fairly big reason there was such a high turnover rate too. On a seven day hitch, you might be lucky to get four days total.
