Hey if youāre interested in the SIU, they have an apprenticeship program in Piney Point, Maryland that is tuition free. They help set you up with your first job and you have B-grade seniority upon completion. Check out: http://www.seafarers.org/phc/entry.xml
The nearest SIU hall to you is:
SANTURCE
1057 Fernandez Juncos Ave., Stop 161/2
Santurce, PR 00907
(787) 721-4033
Best of luck.
Thanks For The Info!
I went to the SIU office here in Puerto Rico,i just send the application for the entry program, but iām not quite sure because they said something about a math test iām worried because my math skills Suckssss, somebody can tell me because i have taken the asvab test and failed the math test.is that test easier than the asvab?
I think the test is 8th or 9th grade level. Good luck!
That is good news to me thanks:D
I just received a book with the info and some paperwork, but they are telling me to send my original MMC,Twic,Passport and i donāt know if i can send copies instead of originals? because i havenāt taked the test neither,i called to the SIU in san juan and they donāt know nothing:eek: they just say call the school.
I sent them copies with a note: In case this is a test, I canāt send you the originals.
Just send in copies, thatās what I did. They will send you a letter telling you when to take the test (which is after you send in your application packet).
Now i will fill all the papers and wait till they send me the letter to take the test:D
when i finish this program in piney point can i get a job in a private company instead of working for the union? because i just want to get the advantage of getting the AB upgrade for free,my goal is to work in the gulf of mexico in any offshore company can i do that? iām interested in that because the pay is good and the schedules are 28/14 or something like that any advice is welcome please.
If youāre looking for a āfree rideā in this industry, union or non-union, youāll be sadly disappointed.
If you make it to Piney Point, ask JC Weigman about your goal of going to work in the oilfield. Then try to describe to us what shade of red he turns.

Deep sea versus Gulf of Mexico oil patch work is night and day. If you go through the SIU school, Iād recommend sailing through the union to get some experience (and see if deep sea is for you or not). Jobs in the oil patch (as well as inshore) are getting few and far between with the current economic condition. When they do hire, theyāll be looking for some experience on your resume.
Luckā¦
The trainee program aināt rocket science and it aināt a walk in the park. Iāve seen several wash-outs at the gate each time Iāve been to Piney Point. RM90 is right. If your going to use the unions resources to advance, at least check out the jobs. There are many opportunities under SIU contract. Not all jobs are 6 months. Many are equal time, 2 for 1, 3 for 1 ect. Graduates from the program get preferential access to jobs. The SIU has the best and most underutilized school for the rates.
Weigh your options instead of the narrow agenda that you seem to have. Limitations in this industry are self imposed, union or non-union.
