MastChain: Ship tracking enters the sharing economy - Splash247

Writing on Medium, contributor Dan Jugy has documented a practical test of exactly that idea, deploying a Raspberry Pi-based AIS receiver on the Bristol Channel coast and feeding live vessel data into MastChain.io, a decentralised maritime data network. The hardware – a Raspberry Pi, a software-defined radio module, and a marine-band antenna – costs a fraction of conventional AIS infrastructure, runs on low power, and can be adapted for off-grid operation using solar and battery systems.

Whether decentralised AIS gains meaningful traction will hinge less on technical feasibility – that bar is already low – and more on whether enough independent operators choose to build out that layer at a moment when the world is paying closer attention than ever to where ships are, and why some would rather not be found.
