Will APL be a purely US flag carrier again?:

A lighthearted few on the future of ships and shipping:

Why have the cost of shipping containers from N.China to USWC more than doubled at the time of a downturn in trade? Both China and the US would like to know:

At least that is something the can agree on, but can they cooperate if/when they find out??

Matson are rated among the top freight transport and logistics companies according to this report in the Russian Shipping Newsletter portnews.ru:

Despite predicted decrease in freight volume the freight rates for China-USWC is increasing:

And is expected to increase further in Sept.:

Is it those greedy foreign shipowners that is taking advantage of the American consumers?

PS> Why is rates quoted per TEU for the Asia-Europe trade, but in FEUs for the China-USWC trade? (Anybody know?)

All major P&I Clubs have issued a circular about new Chinese law prohibits the import, dumping and disposal of both solid wastes, unless subject to a specific import license, and hazardous wastes:

Surprise, surprise; China is fed up of being dumping ground for unsorted and dirty waste from rich countries. That is not news exactly, but they are getting tougher.

Save money by using Ship Managing companies to run you ship(s)?:

How would that go down with the Bayou boys?

A new twist in ship financing. A Leasing company make a “lease and buy-back” deal for two newbuilt ships with another Leasing company:

Hong Kong is not adversely affected by loss of US bilateral shipping tax accord:

In fact it may hurt US just as much, if not more:

If you thought that Maersk was only into Ocean Shipping, think again.
Maersk is also into cross continent rail transport, from North Asia to Europe:

PS> As well as rail and road transport in the US and Europe.

I recall way back in my SeaLand days attending a seminar and one of the speakers talking about their plans for an Asia to Europe rail service (as described in the Maersk article). One of the great challenges was the prevailing corruption, pilferage and theft the company was encountering.

Things may have changed since “way back in time”.

In this case the entire rail transport is in the Russian Federation, thus no need to change from one rail gauge to another.
Not passing through several countries, like the the Asia-Europe rail link from China, via Kazakhstan, Russia and Poland, before reaching Germany, or the Low countries. Maybe even transshipment to UK by lorry and ferry

I hope things have changed but I withhold judgement. The route SeaLand envisioned was Nakhodka to St Pertersburg. Encounters with the Russian Mafia and corrupt officials were, as I understood it, a nightmare.

Sad news (but inevitable, since CMA-CGM took over Neptune Orient Line):

My Father-in-Law did a lot of business with APL when it was still an American company. Mainly cargo survey, but he also piloted their ships in the Malacca Strait and looked after some of their ships that was laid up in Tuas, Singapore. (Sometime in the mid-late 1970s IFAIR)

Even after he sold his company and retired, (in the 1990s) he kept himself busy by collecting and returning the Temperature Recording Devices that was carried in APL reefer containers at the time.
