I am working as a marine surveyor, and need to renew my small vessel captain’s license (100gt). Is that field acceptable to substitute for sea time? Yes I know only the examiner can say for sure…
You are going to have to submit a discussion of how it equates to service. The magic words in 46 CFR 10.232(g) are …closely related to the operation, construction, or repair of vessels. That reg specifically mentions port captain, so I would try to argue that your job is similar.
Worst case is it’s not accepted but you can still renew. You’ll get an open book test to do at home.

Thanks JD. I conduct a lot of sea-trials so I think a reasonable argument for surveying to be deck related, but they might say it is more engineering than deck. My guess is will be evaluated as some percentage. Great to know there is a home open book test as an option. 50 questions from home sounds very easy!
