Scuttlebutt filter problem? - Forum Moderation

It looks like the water supply to the scuttlebutt is being reduced by a bad filter or something clogging the input.

Prehaps the feed water isn’t pure enough to be processed? In ports, in shallow draft areas & in sewage contaminated areas we turn our water makers off. The Fukushima disaster happened in 2011 but we still don’t trust the inlet feed water anywhere near that place. We stop intake when passing within 100 nautical miles.

Too subtle I guess, I was referring to the number of posts under the Scuttlebutt topic that have been closed recently for no apparent reason.

Probably fecal matter in the water - too much sewage - over-population/populism or something!

I posted this, you might have missed it. From gcaptain forum FAQ

We encourage discussions on everything maritime, except for highly political topics which are better left at the dock.

It’s gotten out of hand lately.

Maybe a lese-majeste filter was added?

Forum members have flagged posts / threads for review. Threads from 7 years ago have been revived. I’ve locked or deleted them. I’ve done the same with posts that were similarly overly political.

Sorry guys

Just thought a bit of irreverent Aussie humour might cheer us up a little.

This forum has been through this cycle before. A while back, as an experiment the restrictions on political topics were loosened. Things stayed low-key for awhile, then, as a national election approached, political discourse became more heated and posts here reflected that. People were starting accounts here just to argue politics.

In response moderation of political topics was tightened. That time the same thing happened. Some members raised hell about supposed censorship, suppression of first amendment rights and so forth.

Politics in the U.S. and elsewhere are starting to heat up again and that’s been reflected in an increase in the amount and intensity of the posts here. This is a professional mariners forum, just reining things in some.

You were wrong !!! You bloody foreigner !!!:winking_face_with_tongue:

There is a special/exceptional kind of sense of humor here and that is “ compliant” humor, therefore your funny “donald” thing was busted .

Good laugh is a CRIME!!!

Pity because @jbtam99 has come up with some conspiracy theory insinuating i do some terrible provocations - CRIMES!!! like reviving the 7 years old threads!!! and I was just about to adress this nonsense but the Gov. has decided to put a lid on it and may be will declasify it within the next 50 years or abt. These are rules man!!! take it or leave it. :winking_face_with_tongue:

How about if Scuttlebutt were membership only. One would need to opt in.

Opt in? The simple act of reading it is “opting in”.

Unless someone is too weak (and that seems to go along with being extremely easy to offend and reduce to tears) to resist the urge to read it is a choice to read or not, freely made and entirely personal.

It defies logic that anyone would voluntarily choose to enter a “room” where some folks exchange extreme (to some) or ill tempered thoughts or ideas then feel the need or right to demand redress from a nanny entity.

Your assumption about what’s happening is not correct. The forum members that flag the posts are not involved in the discussion.

I made no such assumption. My reply was to a suggestion that some type of membership or “opt in” might be required. One “opts in” by clicking on this topic, one “opts out” by not clicking or reading a post or by blocking a member whose thoughts or ideas are frightening.

While I have my own thoughts about those who demand protection from unpopular thoughts or ideas, I will just leave it as “it defies logic”.

It’s my view that’s not what happens. Forum members were not frightened by Heiwa’s posts for example but instead several member would respond which would derail the thread.
