Yup. That was the profile pic for one of the forums more (im?)famous members, always good at stirring the shit better than anyone today, but had good points. Think he got banned for pissing off the wrong folks just one too many times.
I thought he was cleared to come back a long while ago but decided not to?
I thought the same so I clicked on his profile pic after @jbtam99 brought it up. Yep, c.cap is in time out for another 74 years.
People online must have thick skin. It’s common for regulars & old timers to trade jabs with one another every once in a while but c.captain called too many new people “dumbass, etc.” for my liking. But it still wouldn’t bother me if his sentence was commuted or pardoned.

Me neither.
He fit the stereotype of an old school salty crusty mariner with a defined lack of tact. There was plenty of good insight, experience and information once you could look past that.

…the Macondo blowout. Then somebody put up a Facebook group that covered the the same topics. Questions are asked, questions answered, exchanges vanish. No topic organization, no search, no posterity. Killed the other forum dead. Please don’t let that happen here.
As far as the two characters are involved, as someone who has been a moderator I think you have to have limited patience with those who persist in off-topic axe grinding and personal attacks. Otherwise the signal to noise ratio drops to the point where the people you want to attend drop out. I remember one guy we had to throw off a specialist forum for the usual lapses. He was a true expert in the field but (as I noted from checking logs) just about every time he posted after the cocktail hour he’d go off on some tear or another and finally it became too much.

Signal to noise ratio is a good way to put it. Knowledgeable posts about maritime topics is signal. Posts about politics on a professional mariners forum is noise.
Judging moderation of a post or thread solely on the basis of what might have offended someone is missing the forest for the trees. Some posts or threads are just adding to the noise.
