You wanna piss off a workboat engineer?

If you know how to use a tap and die set, this is how you do it:

As he and the wiper are sitting in the control room talking about guns and hunting, and the eight point buck they shot last Tuesday, go to the engine room and collect all the nuts and bolts with messed up threads that you have discovered in the last month. Collect them all together, put them in a bucket along with a tap and die set, go to the control room and sit there (make sure to be somewhere in their visual proximity) sit down, and start repairing the threads. Make sure that you don’t have all nuts and bolts of the same size and that they vary quite a bit. This is to ensure that the engineer sees you switching out appropriately fitting taps and dies with ease, and not much difficulty. Be sure and use the thread gauge that comes with the kit too, or to hold a bolt and tap up to the light, so you can see the threads lining up appropriately, the important part is to make sure the engineer sees you doing this. This will really infuriate him. And it will be very entertaining.

–updated–
If you really want to add fuel to the fire, when you are done make sure to tell him which size tap and dies are missing or that would be useful to have in the future. Even better yet: as you are doing this write down the exact pitch, diameters etc on a piece of paper and set it on the log book desk…he will be so MAD, it will be hilarious.
Or, instead of making a show of it, just work in the shop and get it done. Of course instead of noting the exact diameters and pitch. . . since these are standardized, just note coarse or fine thread. . . and, to be honest, where are you finding these nuts and bolts with “messed up” threads? Lying around on deck? In the bins? Maybe you shouldn’t be wasting your time making a show of your perceived intelligence and instead familiarize yourself with the types of equipment, prime movers. . .tracing lines and learning battery charging circuitry. . . .just sayin’. . .

Hey, they have classrooms, too. They take up about three decks of the building where our office is. . . .

How do you draw that conclusion from her saying, “suck it up, you’re not special”?

I mean, come on. This generation in college now requires “trigger warnings” on course syllabi, it’s fucking sad. I read an article a while back talking about how kids today are being coddled so much college students today are about as mature as high school students fifty years ago.

Oh, oh, oh. . . . look at this!

Of course I don’t actually go to University of Phoenix. I could be in Bard college’s distance program for all you know.
Most colleges are rackets anyway, pumping out liberal arts degrees with 60-xxxk of debt (unless of course daddy paid for it) that have absolutely no use on the job market.

My daughter funded her OWN college, graduated as a double major two and a half years ago and just bought her own house last month. The only thing I gave her was a place to stay and food. What is your excuse?

That wasn’t the part. She starts off bragging about how many views she got, then starts talking about how everyone else thinks “their special”, then adding that she is in college. It’s fucking obnoxious. If you are going to find something to post, at least find something that at least was written by someone that isn’t on drugs. Something being called the “Oxycoton chronicles” just hampers the credibility just a bit.

I will say this, at least the Harvard girl, used proper punctuation for something that was meant to be read by the masses, and attempted to use sound logic the best should could. She also didn’t advertise her drug use.

If doing your job, in what your were trained to do and like doing, is “making a show of intelligence”, then that is pretty sad.

I don’t believe you are actually an engineer cmakin. I believe you might know one that you can reference too about questions, but I don’t believe you are one, I think that is your internet identity…and that is pretty clear to me.

Hahahaha, you again make incredibly STUPID assumptions. . . . but I have no need to prove anything to you. . . Of course I haven’t sailed since probably before you were born. . .and have had two career changes since my sailing days, both that require me to keep up on marine engineering (and more in my current position). . . my point was that you were not just doing your job, you were making a show of it.
Only those two, and that was my first time mentioning anything about it. Being “IN college” does not make someone better educated, graduating from college makes someone better educated. People that use “IN” college as an argument for being “smarter” or “more right” is just fucking obnoxious. Yea, I am in college too, University of Phoenix, who gives a fuck?
Look, There are plenty of smart people that don’t go to college and there are plenty of dumb people that do. Some people can be book smart but have no common sense and can’t function outside their studied field. I think you confuse someone with a college degree thinking they are “better” means they think they are a better person… it doesn’t. It does mean they are often considered better qualified for certain jobs by employers. In fact, certain fields absolutely require having a degree to work in the field.

You are pretty young. Only in your 20’s. If you are so intelligent, you should be able to understand that YOUR experiences may not be 100% representative of an entire industry. Are there insensitive boobs in the industry? Yes. Are there guys that will flirt with a girl… I’m sure. Are you going to find people who have advanced in their careers who don’t know everything? You will. Sometimes it just takes putting in the time to advance and sometimes it’s who you know. Is all that fair and sunshine and light? Probably not. I mean, I feel for you, it has got to be a little intimidating for you to be the “new guy” that isn’t a guy. But the way to deal with that isn’t go in with an enormous chip on your shoulder and your offend radar on high.

People talk about their personal lives on board with other people. Guys do it amongst themselves… doesn’t mean they are looking for a relationship. I am sure that there will be guys that want to know if the cute new girl is single too. It would happen in any setting or line of work. Now, if the female is able to be civil and say, “thanks for inquiring, but I really don’t get involved with coworkers… just a personal policy” and move along to asking what their favorite football team is or whether they like to hunt, then most guys will just take that at face value and move on. Now if you rear back and roll your eyes and spin your head around when someone hits on you… I can see why you had problems. If on top of that, you come on board with a know-it-all attitude (like you have done here) then you are going to be less than appreciated on board and likely to experience a rough time from your colleagues. Look, you may or may not have been more skilled or qualified than those you worked with but it seems like you spent so much time doing things like giving “tap and die” classes that you missed the fact that some of these men who had been in the industry much longer than you might have had something worth learning.

Again, you are pretty young with relatively little work experience. At 50, i gather I have had a lot more with a lot of different co-workers. Some were good, some not so much. Some were lazy, stupid or just plain jerks. Some were brilliant, hard working and cool to hang around with. Some were a combination of things. You may have gotten the short stick on your first go around… or maybe you went in with such an attitude that things were destined to implode no matter what. I will give you this, your experience is one of the reasons a lot of military leadership resisted integrating women into a lot of military jobs. When women and men have to work and live closely together there can be other dynamics that come into play that can distract from the mission. You seem to suffer from the hammer nail syndrome. To a hammer, everything is a nail. You attribute every single problem to the fact that you are a woman. I would say that a great deal of your problem is the ginormous chip you have on your shoulder as a young know it all. The fact that you are female is 2nd to that. You have been told repeatedly by many that they have worked with women and that women had advanced. You have to accept the fact that your experience is not everyone’s experience. No one is saying you can’t be proud of your accomplishments but you hate everyone who didn’t have it as “hard” as you. You resent academy grad women because you hawsepiped it. Well, that was your choice, don’t put others down because they chose a different path. You are on board to do a job and to your employer it doesn’t matter HOW you got the skills to do your job, only that you DO your job and work well with your coworkers. So, stop pulling out your “better than you” measuring stick and try just doing your job in a professional way. If someone hits on you, for pete’s sake try to figure out a way to be civil and say you don’t date at work. Learn how to get along with other people, even those with different backgrounds. You don’t have to kiss the chief, but never hurts to kiss a little ass when you are low man and work your butt off to make them look better. Keep your mouth shut more and ears open and you might actually learn something from the old timers.

GO FUCK YOURSELF
I see the level of your intelligence right here. If you want to keep playing here, then you have to accept what we respond with. I have in no way resorted to the level of profanity that you seem to require to get your point across. . .

This person is everything that she protests that she’s not, and nothing that she claims that she is.

She is sometimes amusing for a little while, but it wears off quickly. No one to take seriously.

GO FUCK YOURSELF
Ah, I knew we would get there eventually! I feel your pain cajaya. I have been there, especially with C-Captain in the beginning.

I really tried to read this thread and you may have some good points, but you have really lost a lot of credibility. I am sure you were discriminated against. It happens to everyone in one form or another. The fact is it is hard to move up regardless of sex. It could be the person’s personality, race, gender, haircut, work ethic, the part of the world or states they hail from, many factors affect it. To wave it around like a badge or banner is not doing yourself any favors. Keep your head and prove to yourself your worth. That is all that really matters anyway. I have been under bosses many times in my career that have held me down or back. I have been motivated more by people that told me no or that I couldn’t possibly get that license or class than the ones that actually encouraged me. All you need is that one opportunity, get it. Then it is up to you. Remaining positive and upbeat is important. No one likes to listen to a complainer or whiner. I am not saying you are doing that, but if you are change it. Work out problems and look for solutions. Don’t dwell on wrongdoers or negative people. They are not worth our time.

I wish you the best of luck, we all need it.

I am a big boy! I have never kissed a roughneck either.

This is a horrible thread. If I had an ice pick in my hands I would poke my eyes out, but the damage is already done.

Just for the record I actually did look into this University of Phoenix one time. Holy crap is it expensive. For me to complete a Bachelor’s in Business I was looking at 100k and over 20 hours of online time a week. This is virtually impossible for me to do at work. No way to squeeze in 20 more hours when I pull 100 or more hours every week.

I thought I needed the degree to move up even further in the company. That may be true, but I am very grateful for what I have already achieved. I just hope and pray I can maintain this position for an additional 20 years minimum, 25 if my health holds out.
When did I say I hate academy grads? I said the two experience s cannot be compared. On that note, I do have mad respect for people that get through KP, if it’s anything like what I have heard.
KP is a cake walk. You get a license on attendance alone. Just ask C-Captain.

They only hard part is succeeding in the KP marching band.

Hey I knew if I shook the tree hard enough something would happen. When we first started out on the forum some of the debates between us would have me so frustrated because our viewpoints and opinions were so different I would want to use a similar phrase as what cajaya used.

I think mutual respect kept us in line.

and they serve ice cream with the tasty cake but only after a successful brainwashing session. if you are a bad student who rebels against the entrenched autocrat rulers then there are the vivisection sessions in a room where no one can hear your screams!

I don’t know… seems like you want everyone to think you are spayshull because you hawsepiped it as if that makes you somehow better than them and more deserving of respect. Every time you mention an academy female there is some derision on your part. Let’s be abundantly clear, your employer and your superiors don’t CARE how you got your experience. Hawsepipe/academy… they probably don’t much care… both require commitment and hard work. What they care about is you becoming a monumental pain in the tail of everyone on board and interfering with the operations of the vessel by creating a toxic environment with your inability to get along with ANYONE.

They care that you do what they tell you to do and they want you to be a team player. No they don’t expect you to blow the crew. But they don’t want the “new guy” coming on board and randomly deciding to “work on stuff” without their permission… even if that means doing your tap & die work. Until they have overseen you work, they have no idea what you are really capable of… so they probably don’t want you monkeying around and trying to tell them what to do the minute you step aboard. You are an unknown and they are responsible if you screw the pooch. They are likely to give you low risk tasks at first, not because you are a chick… but because you are a young kid who may or may not know how to do crap.

Well stated. I had a new assistant hire on. . . was in over his head quickly, but for the most part, did what he was asked and kept his head down. Didn’t do much more, but really, just having eyes and ears, the minimum was acceptable. . . he finished his “probationary” period, and then it all hit the fan. I have no idea what my relief may have told him, but he started doing things. . . and not doing things. . . and then lying about it. . . at one point, we were coming in to Tampa, and needed an air start motor for one of the generator prime movers on the barge (DD 16V71T). Had one specifically ordered to be delivered upon arrival and could get it in pretty quick. As a back up, I had an old beat up starter standing by, but really didn’t want to put it in unless the new one didn’t get in. Well, you can guess what happened. After I specifically told him NOT to install the beater, the new starter was delivered at the dock. I went to put it in, but first, I had to remove the old beater that someone put it. . . great. . . I then gave him a simple assignment of tracing out the FW engine cooling system and a couple of other tasks to see what he had learned in 6 months of being onboard. . . sigh. . . had no clue of even knowing what check valves or thermostats were, let alone the standard schematic symbols for same. . .
