Raises

He raises are good. It’s more then I ever thought we would make out here. But when other company’s are still out paying chouest. Then they got to go higher. People are still going to leave. Chouest hasn’t stopped the bleeding yet!

So what are the rates for 3rd, 2nd, and lead captains (Supply/1600) in GOM and what about Brazil? Anchor boat differential???

Like I mentioned in the hornbeck thread before I read this thread and saw the same question…
I know a newer guy at Chouest sailing as lead Capt. on a crew boat with a 1600 oceans and DP. He works international and just got a $50 raise that takes him just over $400 a day. I don’t know about the guys in the gulf besides the previous posts stating that ALL masters at Chouest got $100. So some information here is not correct.

Doesn’t matter if you have an unlimited master on a crew boat, you get crew boat pay. Some boats and senior positions were $215/ day raise. Depends on where you fall in the spectrum.

I absolutely agree. I know for a fact my buddy wont take a raise with a bigger boat in the gulf because he likes the location of the crew boat overseas. His boss probably knows that too. My point was to give some insight into the different raises that Chouest gave for different vessels overseas that captmarcus was inquiring about. Some other threads are listing Chouest raises with the implication that $100 was given to all masters without specifying what type of vessel.

I would guess that the posts about the raise being a slap in the face did not get $215.

As far as stopping the bleeding, that remains to be seen. Chouest’s new policy of making DP students pay for all their training if they don’t work for a set number of years after the class may help stem the tide. So will the fact that AB’s and cooks can no longer get DP.

Not all capt.'s at chouest got a 100 a day raise . A capt. on a < 278 received 15 a day . The deck hands received more , twice as much . I don’t know about the others boats . For some reason the pay is by classification . I think it would be better done by what license you hold and the extras you hold . Chouest doesn’t stop AB’s or coks from taking the DP . The NI will not give a certificate to someone without a license . My advise would be to take the class as a AB . The way the DP is structured know it will take a good year . Realistically 2 years . Chouest is making you sign a contract for DP class . Believe it or not company’s make investments in let’s say this DP program . If 30 % of the people take the class and soon after quite to go to another company . Not a good investment for Chouest . I had to sign for the advanced DP class . Even a 2500 it’s a good deal compared to going to a alternate school . I don’t think Chouest is trying to make any money with the school just trying to make a return in there investment .

Good post. CHOUEST is not screwing people. They know what’s going on. We just don’t know.

NOPE. That will not stem the tide one bit (raises will). The reason why that was started was because a great deal of the young academy guys were going to drilling not long after getting NI DP license. Chouest decided to do what you described. I think it amounts to a few grand. That is nothing in the big picture. The first year retention at some of the drilling companies will be x5 of whatever those DP courses cost them. No big deal. Most will pay with a smile. What they have achieved was the experience to get the DP license. You can’t charge for that. As an operator you have to pay with a day rate.

Many good people used the CAP program to get Chief Mate courses for over $20,000 and still left. Obviously, they paid the company back and the company didn’t lose a penny, but did not stay the 2 years to get repayment once they had an offer from a drilling company. $20,000 doesn’t amount to much once you get a offer of 12-18% yearly bonuses not counting retention that exceeds what is being walked away from, and you get that every year. The CAP program was change to 5 years as a result - same logic as you described. If they’re not staying for 2 years then why 5 years? Why $2000 when not $20,000?

People have their own idea of what they want to do and where they want to do it, and at the end of the day, that’s where they will go - for the good of their at home families. The money is still in drilling right now.

But I will admit, If I was offered the current rate of $800/day plus seniority as Master on the Island Enforcer (the position I left), I would have stayed, but now that I left, it’s just not enough to go back after making the move. I would have to take a $60,000/year pay cut to go back, and that is for freezing in Alaska. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure that one, even though Chouest is where my heart is, I’m not an idiot. I don’t think I would have been successful in the first place if I entertained that thought.

Man you really hit me hard with that one, I’m about to cry with a comment like that. I think Lee would tell you to stop acting like a little …

Sarcasm!!!

Probably so, and there was a time, for about a one second duration, that I may have cared.
