Some tips on applying for federal jobs. The process is the reverse of most proivate sector jobs where you give them a resume and a general info up front and go to an interview for the rest. In federal jobs you have to put it all out up front or you won’t get in the door. All applicants are scored based on their answers to the announcement questions. Too low of a score will disqualify you, and there are also rules giving preferential treatment to veterans with the same or higher scores. So you need to get all the information out up front. Most federal announcements have questions that ask you to rate your experience on a 1 to 5 scale with 1 being “I can’t even spell STCW” and 5 being you won a Nobel prize for it. I hate these questions and the announcements I have written (e.g. the one at NMC for an engineer) use a yes/no format, I like these as there’s no room for BS. Anyway, be honest but give yourself the benfit of the doubt. Blatant padding will get your score reduced. Also consider adding a “narrative supplement” that addresses the “quality ranking factors” in the announcement. This will help if you get past the initial screening and you get referred to the office with the job. It helps distinguish you, and also shows you know how to write (important for some jobs).

that explains much… personally view the USAjob application process as cumbersome and a deteriant…might that be the design…either way definitly the wrong mindset…agree with the yes/no format…might motivate more applicants??

Taking time to write KSA’s is no big deal to me as I have nothing but time these days. I just wish the whole process in general was faster and in some cases their selection criteria was a little clearer. For example for the vessel traffic manager position why should it take 90 days after the closing date to make a decision? What are they taking into account?
