I need a coast guard approved class for cpr/first aid NOT stcw but due to scheduling issues it’s been a struggle trying to find time for the class. I ran across this website here:
Has anyone used this? The certificate they gives looks alright but I’m sketchy about 100% online classes
It would work for “frantzc” but might not work for others. ARC courses are good for the requirement for your first national endorsement (license) but not for STCW.
What actually needs to be on the cpr certificate to say it’s “coast guard approved”? The link I posted gives an example certificate with some cfr references, but none of my certificates from the apprentice steersman program have this. They have a course number though
Why does it need to say it’s Coast Guard approved? If it’s not to meet a regulatory training requirement and is only approved to take the place of the Coast Guard exam, the only one that needs to know if it’s approved is the NMC, and they use the NMC ID number that is on the certificate. It’s of no relevance to third parties, including but not limited to port state control.
Also, just saying “Coast Guard approved” and nothing more is useless. The Coast Guard approves thousands of courses for many different reasons. Saying it’s approved but not what it’s approved for is useless, maybe worse as it invites confusion over what it’s actually approved for, e.g. a firefighting course that doesn’t meet and is not approved for STCW.
In any case, paper certificates will soon be joining the dinosaurs. The Coast Guard is developing an electronic system that will eliminate paper. The Coast Guard is currently preparing a final rule to facilitate the new system that will require all schools with approved courses to submit their course completion data electronically. (That same rule makes the title of some national endorsements gender-neutral).
