Stcw

I got the basic firefighting course out of the way through MSC thanks to my company, and got first aid/CPR/aed through red cross. I contacted Suny Maritime and they said I could individually take the PST and PSSR sections of their BST course. Am I correct in thinking that this will fulfill all the requirements to get my STCW? Do I just include all the separate certificates and put down on my application “STCW-95” along with everything else im applying for?

Just want to make sure before I spend the money.

Thanks!

First, SUNY Maritime can only do this if they have approval for each part of BST as its own separate course. If they only have approval for a single course covering all 4 elements, you have to take the whole thing.

Only a very few American Red Cross chapters have approval for any of their courses. The course you took is only acceptable if it is from one of the chapters having their own approval. I am nt familiar with which chapters are currently approved, but at least in the recent past the King County (WA), Southeast Louisiana and Carolina Low Country chapters had approval.

Anticipating the question “why not all chapters?” Coast Guard “approval” is more than just looking at the curriculum., It’s an on-going program of auditing and other requirements that ensure the course is delivered in accordance with its curriculum and other Coast Guard regulations and policy. Only a few chapters have been willing to subject themselves to that on-going oversight.

Thank you Mr. Cavo! I will check with Suny on that before i register. Hopefully I didn’t waste the time and money on the red cross course. If did, however, are the American heart association courses more widely approved?

Thanks again!

I don’t know the current approval status for American Heart Association copurses, but at least two years ago they were approved for STCW at all chapters. The NMC web page should have current info.

What does stcw code II/2;II/4;IV/2;IV/1;VI/2;VI/3;VI/5 means ?
