I am thinking about flying down to LA in a week to make the rounds of boat companies. What do the people working there now think the odds of a 1600 ton master oceans with a master of towing oceans finding a dp trainee position are? (I dont want to waste the plane ticket money on say a 5% chance.)
I heard “walk in” is the best way to get a job down there.
Hundreds of emails, sending lengthy resumes did not seem to attract their attention, so far.
I am thinking of doing the same thing later this year with less than 5% chance ;
Unlimited Master, just got off of Panamax Freighter as Capt.
just one PSV boat experience, no DP cert. (planning to attend Kongberg for Induction Course)…
Maybe you have better chance…with towing expertise…
Yeah, I heard walk in was how to do it too. I am wondering more about timing. For those that work down there, do you have any idea about the odds of getting a job if I come down in a week?

Having the towing is definitely a feather in your cap. Most of the Anchor Handlers want their captains to have the towing endorsement. We all know what a pain it is to get this towing endorsement. On the other hand it is fairly simple to get the DP training, with time in position. Plus there is no licensing requirement that says you must have the DP certificate. This is normally client driven. Chouest crews their vessels in such a way that the client requirements should be met allowing someone like yourself to come on board with your towing experience and get your DP time.
I had the opposite problem at one time I had my DP, but not the Towing. Although I had towed rigs I had to keep track of the tows and the Coast Guard only counted the days I was actually under tow. Each day I had on a tug or under tow counted. From what I hear, since I can not show any towing time, I will lose my Master of towing vessels on my next renewal. Any info on that?
Licensed positions are almost a lock now a days. I would say come with bags packed. If I had to give a percentage on a walk in licensed guy getting hired that day right now I would say 85%.
In general or at specific company?
I think it’s true. Come with your bags ready to go. None of the companies down south are run by far sighted management. They practice what I call crisis hiring. But over all, there’s likely to be at least one company in crisis at any given time.
But DP trainee? They’re going to be wanting at least the first class out of the way.
Good luck,

I don’t think you will have a hard time finding a job! It will be a good investment of you time and money! I hope so anyway!!
Good Luck! And let us know how it works out for you!

Actually, I have had at least 4 guys stay at my B&B in the last 2 months that have gotten jobs as 500 ton captain and 1600 ton captain WITHOUT DP.
Both companies have trained them for DP after they were employed.
Just thought I would share this with guys/gals that have contemplated this thought.
I have a 1600 ton master oceans with towing. I was just hired at Hornbeck Offshore last week and I start DP training Monday…then off to sea Thursday. They are a very good company from what I can see. They are building 16 new vessels with an options for 44 more. At $45 million each…they must know something …
What kind of rotation is Hornbeck working? And what is starting mate pay over there already having DP?

What are their current rates looking like?
I applied at hornbeck two months ago and never heard anything…
Did you have to apply in person with them?
I just applied online and was called in for interview. The rotations are choice of 21/21,28/28, 35/35 or 28/14…
As for pay…it depends on what license you have…certifications and experience. With experience and DP…id say a minimum of $490- 570…little exp…$460…
