NY Times: New Hope for Turnaround at Troubled Service Academy
uniblab, ignore lil’ccappy and stay on here and keep posting:
I agree Richard, not to ignore, but to jump right in.
You’re from MMA, I sailed with grads from Maine, dam fine shipmates, all.
Ever hear of the SS Wilmington Getty, SS Louisiana Getty?
Well the forum is not unmoderated, it’s self moderated, meaning if information is false or out of line you can report it and 90% of the time we remove the offending remark.

That said I could also do without the lawrence welk and baby photos (though I do enjoy the Maltese Falcon) and welcome you to stick to the homepage news which is strictly edited and free of these shenanigans.

Lucky for my career and the future of this site… I’m not alone.
I definitely agree with you John!
Where do you think that the “original” pointy stick came from? I watched Monty Python from its first release in the US in the early 70’s and know the dialog from half the skits by memory (yes, I am getting therapy for that)
Ah, quite laudable, Sir.

A question if I may, do you like anchovies?
They go right smartly with Omelette du Fromage

I’ve been biting my tongue every time you mention the stick, but I can’t keep quiet any longer. It’s not a “pointy” stick, it’s a POINT-TED stick!!

You’re drunk, ain’t cha

Thank you all for the thanks but I do need to share the credit. So here’s a bit of history:

The truth is this forum was up for over a year with me pretty much talking to myself because I deleted anything I felt was inappropriate. Then a few guys started asking serious questions and got serious answers void of all humor. So instead of talking to myself we had a handful of guy… but, mostly, no one stuck around.

One of those handful was Capt. Lee who spent hours each week researching sources to write thoughtful answers to difficult questions.

He was captain of a large workboat and came to gcaptain because our competitor at the time, a maritime forum that was plagued with political bickering, racial comments and mean spirited attacks and Lee just wanted to share helpfull advice.

At the time Lee worked 12 hour shifts alongside another captain, Anchorman. Well it wasn’t long before this relief found out about Lee’s long list of posts and soon Anchorman started waiting until Lee fell asleep at night then he’d logging into gcaptain for the sole purpose of poking fun at Lee’s comments, blowing holes in his theories and giving him a rash of sh!t.

My first reaction was “who the F is this guys giving our best contributor a hard time!?” and I eanted to delete this guy and ban him from the forum but there were a few problems. First his posts were F’n funny as hell! Some of funniest stuff I’d ever read in my life and second most of what he said - at least the stuff between the hijinks- was spot on and pertinent to the conversation. His posts weren’t just funny but contained smart and valuable advice!

So I could have banned him but I would gave lost both entertainment and valuable information so I hesitated.

At this point I wasn’t logging in each night just to check up on the site and diligently moderate posts … now I was glued to my computer clicking refresh every 5 minutes eagerly waiting Anchorman’s next post! But I did feel bad because Anchorman was laying it on Lee thick and Lee was our best, most helpful, member. I would have done nearly anything to defend him if he was attacked by the press, laid off from work or harassed by the coast guard (I still would!)

So I asked Lee if he wanted Anchorman banned and he basically laughed at me saying something along the lines of “You think I can’t handle my own relief!?”

What ensued was pure comedy gold. Lee started shoveling derogatory statements back to Anchorman… remarks smarter and funnier than he ever received back. Did Anchorman give up, loose his cool or lay off Lee. Hell no, instead he began upping his fame. What ensued was a comedy arms race with bigger bangs than a russian nuke explosion!

Then I started getting calls from friends saying things like “Who are these guys, they have all the DPO’s on the ship glued to the computer and in stiches” and “We almost had a drive off today because the engineers were all up in dpo laughing about some forum post.” Soon these guys started logging in to join the discussion.

Mariners, lots and lots of them, started logging on and the forum took off.

But the best part was not the humor itself, it was the fact that here were two really smart guys with very different opinions on running a ship, instead avoiding each-other and complaining to the crews about the shit the other guy was doing… Instead of hating each other (as so often happens when to smart, experienced captains are put on one ship) these guys were best friends! They worked off each orher’s strengths and used humor to smooth out there differences!

Sure, I was Chief Mate on Transocean’s biggest/newest badass drillshup with my choice of command or transfer to the first of Transocean’s newbuilds and they were on a much smaller workboat but… they showed me how ships should operate and kinda made me want to leave and join their crew.

Well many years have past and while they still sling danm funny remarks at each other… one is now captain of his own big bad drillship and the other is among the industry’s most respected Chief Mates and on the short list for command… and If they ever join the same ship as Captain, I’ll be the first to volunteer as their chief mate.

P.S. There is another, related, reason I stopped actively moderating the discussion. When these guys started getting on a roll the sign-up rate and number of new messages started skyrocketing. I started having trouble just reading all the posts and deleting spam let alone decide if each one is appropriate or not. And how could I let Lee and Anchorman get away with with their comments without allowing new members a chance to prove there was wisdom and experience behind their humor? How would I have know c.captain or sweat and grease had decades of hard won experience and an eagerness to share their wisdom if I had banned them after the first inappropriate post?

Back to the history, as the forum started rocketing in popularity I began to get bogged down in major technical problems. The high visitor count combined with hundreds clicking refresh every ten seconds to read Lee’s latest remark… started causing server crashes and attracted spam bots. So I became to busy to moderate every post.

And a few months later, when things settled down, I set up moderator accounts to enable a few select members help moderate posts. But who do you pick for this job? Most forums pick their top members so I offered the gig to anchorman, Lee and a few others. And rhe basic response was something along the lines of: "You want me to play HR and babysit new recruits? We are all adults here and none of us want that. Believe me, if someone steps out of line, lies or gives another member too much grief then we’ll have no problem calling bullshit. Just keep the spam and politics iff the board and we’ll be fine. "

So thats why we have no moderators. We are all adults, all know the basic rules and we can all report any post we like for further review… and we have NO shortage of guys willing to call bullshit!

John,

I know you have heard it before, but thanks again for such an excellent place for mariners to come together, share information, or just whine and moan. I’ve got no problem admitting this entire website is a bit addictive…

I think love is a strong word but, maybe. After all it takes chris rock only 45 seconds to make a strong case that what I feel for you is love

I have not had such a belly laugh in years! I have effing tears and my gut hurts now!

You get no contest from me on that allegation…I’ve been tipping back a few already today and I’m just getting rolling…too bad you’re not here so I can pop the top of a cold one for you… Soon it will be crewchange again and all the fun goes away (ok, maybe a little of the fun stays but not the liquid kind)

cheers shipmate…

Aw shucks John…I didn’t know you felt that way about me? Just try to not love me too much…it would be catastrophic for my health and wellbeing!

Google works too - I knew right way it was about water and worms, perhaps in some unfortunate stomach. You guys need a room.

You bet c.captain;
I’ve got a lot of thanks to pass your way, c.captain. At first, you might recall, I did the KP dance, then a class mate of mine, a good friend while at KP, a dam good man, a man who sailed, advanced his License to Chief Engineer, then went ashore, finally to become the CEO of an American Ship Building outfit, and he gave me a challenge. He requested for me to think about and compose my reasons why KP produces such gifted leaders. I have to say, I stayed away from everything involving KP in my many years at sea so I had to do some research. Shortly it was clear to me that all was not right at KP, and, more importantly, it was nor right for a few decades. When that moment of realization hit me I sent you my apologizes. I’m disgusted with what KP morphed into what we are dealing with today.

Cheers, c. captain, my shipmate

Great swinging balls on Saint Pete - Do I have to do a google translate on this one too?

I just did.

The results are not quite clear.
