Non USCG required training question

I am interested in finding out what training some of you guys have taken that you find benefited you most. I just recently sat in on an HVAC/R class and I have found it to be VERY useful although it’s not required by USCG. I apologize if the topic has been dragged up before.

I believe my most effective course
/ exam I took that has had a measurable effect on work was Microsoft A+ . It was a totally non boat related course that taught me how computers operate, and how to fix them. This used to come in handy many times when aboard and trying to fix this fucking paperless wizard we have.

But in all honesty I don’t touch the company computer anymore, if it is broken, or has the blue screen of death I just phone in a work order and let the dweebe in IT deal with it.

Concerning non required instruction it was probably diet and food instruction. Who the heck knew that a whole RibEye steak wasn’t ONE serving?

You are correct the HVAC classes are not coast guard required, but if you ever get into the upper level engineer license catogory you wil find it amost a necessity to have a EPA universal certificate to be able to handle freon or alot of companies won’t hire you. It is not coast guard reguired to be certified crane operator but all the chiefs and assistants in our fleet got to go to crane school. That is a grey area from ABS. They make the Engineers responsible for the maintenance on the crane’s and big sub sea winches, but you have to be a certified crane operator, to be qualifed to do inspections on that equipment. Also as Cappy said some basic computer classes is most benefical in helping with all the regulations and paperwork that we are required to do now days. You just abot have to know how to write an excel spread sheet or your screwed.

Also HUET not coast guard required but we have to all go through it as well.
