New Question for JD Cavo

Retired Navy Limited Duty Officer LT, former Operations Specialist Senior Chief E-8, 16 total years at sea, qualified Surface Warfare Officer/ OOD on CG/CGN 5 years, JOOD on FFG class 6 years.

Accepted a position with MSC as an Ops Chief but don’t plan to stay unlicensed for long. I leave June 2nd for NEO in Norfolk. Follow on training to complete STWC requirements.

An suggestions on how to move quickly to 3rd mate and beyond?

Appreciate any feedback,

Get a sea service letter from the Navy as per the USCG/NMC website, gather copies of each and every document in your service record (most important are your JOOD/OOD/SWO letters and ALL your Evals & FitReps in chronological order and schools). The more paperwork you shove at them the better your chances are to get everything you ask for. Submit all that info as supporting documentation with your application. I would ask for Second Mate at a minimum and maybe even Chief Mate; you probably have enough sea time. Give them plenty of time to evaluate your package and they will come back with what you qualify for and any additional requirements you will need prior to testing. You will not get a definitive answer without submitting your application.

How recent is your seatime? Check the regs. Anything older than 10 u can’t use and recency, I believe, is anytime in the last 3 years.

To quote jdcavo from 4 days ago:
“Apart from the 90 days used to meet the recency requirements in 46 CFR 11.201©, there is no time limit on sea service.”

Recency is in the last 3 years. But sea service time itself never expires.

Thanks JD and Boats…

The recency is an issue, I’m past three years. So I guess the answer is what I have been thinking, get the STCW completed in NJ, knock out the first round at sea and come back prepared to test.

Fair winds and following seas!

You need to go to the national archives web site. They will have the information for requesting documentation for your military career now that you are out. Be sure to be clear on the form that you are asking for a Statement of Credible Sea service, or they will just send you a DD-214 which will not work. You can either download the request form and mail it in, for fill it out and file it on line.

Followed your instructions and it worked great, thanks very much Robert!

Indeed, it was. Thats why I used the quote function to include your post in my post.

You will likely send your request to the finance center at Millington Tennessee. Depends on when you were in and when you got out. Expect it to take about 3 months.
Indeed, it was. Thats why I used the quote function to include your post in my post.
I did not post a question to Mr. Cavo. My question was the post addressing Mr. Cavo as JD. I think he deserves some respect, for all the help he has given us on this forum. I have plenty of COUTH

Another fine apology. I hope you do not act like this at work. If you do I pity the guys and gals that have to work with you.
Back in the day I have seen some tough guys lose some teeth after “Apologies” like that.
