Greetings guys. Just got hired on at Marquette as a deckhand and I’m glad to finally get my foot in the door. Any advice on what I should bring with me. Just trying to make sure I’m set when I’m out there on the water.
A lot of threads on this. Was going to list, but I don’t got much time. Go to your browser type: what to pack site:gcaptain.com
Or similar keywords.
Edit: Congratulations on your new life.
Marquette huh? I hope you like all your food fried and can understand Cajun!
Haha
My friend just quit there last month for a better company. Messed up crews from what I hear… They also stopped paying travel and pay kinda low anyway… That said, a foot in the door is a start!

Depending on where you’re going to be working will determine if they will pay for travel or not. On my first tour I will be working in the gulf so i have to drive to Louisanna. Pay is lower than what I expected but I can’t complain. I just want the experience
My only suggestion is that buy steel capped sneakers versus shoes with Dickie’s fiber glass socks. buy the socks first as they’re thick and then the sneakers. Having said that, sneakers won’t be water proof, so shoes are good and I recommend Wolverine as they’re light as compared to Timberland, which are heavy and feel like 5lbs weight on your feet. Buy a 1/2 size bigger as you’ll be on your feet the whole day and your feet will swell.
Good luck in your new job
Shower shoes.
I have been having good luck with the safety toe Keen shoes. I prefer the low ones if the company allows them. I also recommend bringing a good folding knife a couple pair of gloves and some safety glasses (tinted and clear).

Yeah, the Keens are terrific. I have a pair of, I think “Detroit” mids (steel toe) and I even wear them off the boat. Hiked Acadia National Park with them, too.
KY jelly and, about a terabyte of porn…

True, also a calendar might be a good idea. Tuesday and Thursday is usually the new guy’s days in the barrel.
You going to work in the inland or offshore division? Inland will not open many doors if want to work offshore, you don’t even need a MMC to work the deck on inland push boats

If you found work in this market, great work. Just keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut and you’ll be fine.
Don’t ever say “that’s not my job”
Offer to help the chief, cook, whoever, once you’ve done your own work. They’ll help you next time. Clean up after yourself, and PLEASE go to your room after your watch.

Marquette. Haha. We have a name for them at the company I work for, but if I put it on here the post will probably just be taken down. Glad you found a job. Get the experience, and find a better company to work for.
