What should a new os deckhand bring with him for offshore tug work first trip out
A thick skin and a strong back. A good attitude, look up to everyone as an opportunity to learn and grow. Plan to learn your job and do your best. Everyday.
I’m sure they’ll be others chiming in with proper equipment, etc. but the above paragraph is equally if not more important than jeans, glasses, etc.
I no all of that from what ive read im just a warm body. Im just wondering equipment wise now
MMC + TWIC + Passport+ any training certs you have, rain gear, extratufs, steel toe work boots, hat/watch cap, couple pairs of work clothes (jeans + t-shirts), some warm stuff, folding knife + flashlight (w/ extra batteries), enough toiletries to last you at a couple months, 1 pair of lounging clothes, 1 pair of travel clothes, some books/movies/music for entertainment, enough meds if you take any to last a few months, AND a couple of the latest newspapers for the capt if you’re looking to brownnose a little bit.
Hard hats, safety glasses, and work gloves should already be on the boat.
Enjoy!
EDIT: also when people give you advice (there will be plenty) just smile and nod your head, don’t say “I already know that”, even if you do.
For sure stuff:
Good works boots, flip flops for showers, a good knife (spyderco), coveralls, work pants, work shirts, good pair of gloves (rubber & leather), rain gear, rubber boots, flash light, small note pad/pen and your own sanitary items (bring your own shampoo/soap, probably won’t be provided). Bring enough medications, sanitary and vices for at least 30 or more days, depending on trip.
Other items:
Own pair of safety glasses, bandanas, good water bottle, ear buds for iPod, books, magazines.
If you’re meeting the boat and they’ve been out a while, get a few different newspapers and some doughnuts. Guys like that kind of stuff.

Be sure to bring enough porn to share with all your shipmates
and plenty of cheez whiz…
.
Thanks for all the help guys. Now my question is were can i get decent rain gear that wont kill the bank i would prefer to go to a store not the internet i live in philly area if that helps
Some of this all depends on how long you’re gonna be out for but I guess if you’re on a tug it’s gonna be about two weeks? That’s not too long.
All those, a sharp knife, a good headlamp, and your own safety glasses. Any of those MAY be provided for you but if you bring your own not only will you APPEAR to be prepared, but also you won’t get crappy “seconds and hand-me-downs”.
Professional development material never hurts…the most important thing is to to keep your eyes and ears open. If you are working in an area where survival suits are provided, bust that puppy out, wax the zipper, and check the batteries.
I second the Professional development material. Buy a good knot book or knot App for your phone.

nothing like a bunch of men who are weeks into a long hitch sharing porn. If the bunks have privacy curtains expect to accidentally catch a puppet show.
Porn shouldn’t be shared. It’s 2015, everyone can get their own.
I would bring a few seasons of a TV show to watch on a laptop or tablet, definitely bring entertainment.
Otherwise no matter what, bring oilskins! Love watching guys get soaking wet without the right gear.
Sounds kinky big boy!!

wait a minute…new deckhand on board? All you need to bring is a strong back. After you are done scrubbing toilets, needle gunning, troubleshooting the msd for the chief, cooking and other sort of domestics (not necessarily in that order) you will be too tired to catch up on the last season of game of thrones or the walking dead. Also, no celly phones on watch.

the FUCK! What kind of shipmate are you? Share and share alike I always say…plus it’s nice to get fresh material too.

c.captain is old school…probably still prefers a physical newspaper, and maybe a paper nudy magazine?
nowadays its way more convenient to load up some novels on your tablet, even though its more expensive than what I used to do, which is buy used paperbacks at the swapmeet. Free porn is available to download or view at your fingertips in these modern times. Gotta do something since the wife refuses to send me naughty pics of herself. woohoo!

For sure! That’s why I said it Larry Flynt
Reading material. Now, it has been a few decades, but I would imagine some paperbacks would be popular. They can be shared much more easily than e-books. . . . I used to bring several books every time I came back to sea and put them in the “library” when I finished them. Sadly, I don’t read as much now as I did when I was sailing. . . .
yes but a guy who sometimes can’t figure out he needs to beat It and go to his room off watch will go more willingly if he has things to do in his room. Nothin worse than a guy hanging out around the boat all day who can’t take the hint.
