I have just completed my 30 dp days familiarization onboard. (new logbook)
All familiarization tasks pp21-27 and competent’s officer initial validation p.28 were signed by my captain.
What makes me worry is my captain already signed it but he don’t have a DP license yet. We got confused with this ‘COC or DP cert’.
When I read the guidelines for filling up this new DP logbook A5, what I understood is that those sections must be signed only by a DP licensed officer.
I am still onboard, what must I do with those sections? I’m afraid this will give me headaches when I will finish and apply for DP license.
I have found a PDF file on Nautical institue (link: http://www.nautinst.org/download.cfm?docid=DBCB1258-7093-4F02-8200E95A164981A9 ) Seagoing Familiarisation Watchkeeping Declaration.
Do I have to secure a copy of this file and have it signed by my DPO mates while I’m still onboard?

Thanks and best regards![/QUOTE]
whatever has been improperly signed by someone w/o a DP cert should be rectified by printing out equivalent forms from NI website and filling them out appropriately and then get them signed by certified DP operator. do not make any corrections in your logbook. that is just asking for trouble.
either email NI or call them (tuesdays and thursdays) with logbook in hand and explain the situation. you have a different logbook than I do, but you will still deal with the same non-profit bureaucratic red tape when you eventually mail off that book. get it all right on the front end.
Why don’t you scan the relevant pages and email the NI as opposed to asking people who may think they know the right answer. Just a thought. Every time I thought my log book was jacked that is exactly what they (NI) told me.
The captain that signed off on my DP book wasn’t a licensed DPO and my license was issued. FWIW. I’m pretty sure it’s valid as long as he is Master of the DP vessel. That is, unless things have changed.

I’m fairly sure that the master need not be DP certified. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, a dp trainee who also is master may sign his or her own logbook so long as it also is endorsed by the vessel company office.

that is true for all but section F (final sign off).
If you are the Master applying
for your DP certificate then
you should only sign Section
C yourself if no other suitable
person is available.
However, in this case you will
need to obtain an additional
declaration form and arrange
to have it completed by one of
the following authorised
personnel who knows your
capabilities:
! The vessel’s Relief Master
! A certified DPO onboard
! A Competent Officer*
(Please note that the certified DPO
and Competent Officer are required
to hold a valid DP certificate to be
able to sign this section and/or the
Seagoing Familiarisation
Declaration form).
NOT worth the trouble of a denial, just because they may not like your “additonal declaration form.”
Section F:
The Master of the last vessel
you have sailed on before
you apply for your DP
Certificate must complete
this form. If you are the
Master applying for your DP
certificate then you cannot
sign this form yourself.
Instead you should have it
countersigned by one of the
following authorised
personnel who knows your
capabilities:
! The vessel’s Relief Master
! A certified DPO onboard
!An Operations Manager (or
equivalent).
(Please note that the Relief Master
and Operations Manager are not
required to hold a DP certificate to be
able to sign the Section F form).
still a very messed up system by which a vessel mgr (who may very well never have worked a DP system, let alone has a license) can sign off the final competency.
The Ni bent these rules to accommodate the industry where as above the trainee is the only person on board with any dp knowledge.
How would you like to fly with a captain that was signed off by by the head burser?
Farcical really but its the offshore industry after all…

This is a really silly thread. We all know the NI is so overwhelmed with applications, and their vetting is a joke at best. When people who never sit at the DP desk, namely chief mates and masters at companies like noble, ensco, transocean get their dp certificate makes the whole system a joke. Just put the book in, they really dont know. Its horrible I say that, but its the truth.
